Outdoor NEMA 14-50 Enclosure

Personally, I'd leave the entire thing plugged in. Put a hook on the wall for the box and one for the cord. I have't looked at our Gen2 UMC to see if one orientation or another is better for outdoors. I purchased a WC, but only because of a utility company 50% rebate.

I've never used the UMC for travel, so the "keep one in the trunk" argument doesn't stand for me.


I kinda dig this setup... Found on etsy for $25 (includes a dock holder and a mount)

Hi there,

I live in Toronto, Canada where we get to experience all sides of beautiful nature such as heavy rain, heavy snow, heavy winds and hot summers. I didn't feel quite safe leaving my NEMA 14-50 outlet outside on its own, even though the metal box it came with was rated for the commercial outdoor use. I was worried about the rain or the snow getting into the gap where the NEMA 14-50 adapter connects to the stock charging cable that came with my Model Y that I was planning to use to charge my EV.
I decided to build a small enclosure box for my outlet so I could even store my cable inside in case I don't want to take it to my car one day.

For the frame I used some 2x4 boards, then covered everything with plywood and added 1x5 pressure treated boards to match the look of my deck.

For the power connection I used a 40 Amp breaker and x4 8-gauge wires (red, black, green and white), I cut them to length at the Home Depot.
I also bought a 3/4 inch non-metallic liquid tight flexible conduit. According to the table it can take up to 6 8-gauge wires so I was safe on that side and it was quite easy to feed 4 wires in there.
The gen 2 charger is limited to 32 amp anyway which is exactly 80% of a constant load on a 40 Amp breaker. You can always lowered it in the car to like 30 amps or something like that if you wish.
My Model Y 2021 long range is charging at 8 kW/hr with this 32 amp setup (on a 40 Amp breaker). Which gives you approximately 10% of the charge every hour. Just perfect for an overnight charge.
