Picked up VIN 4375 at the factory and drove it back down to LA with a few friends yesterday. The tour was great and it's an awesome car that actually lives up to the hype. I made one of my friends sick with the stomach-churning acceleration, so I had to take it easy - but man is it fun to accelerate so effortlessly, like driving a rollercoaster.
I hit all 3 superchargers on the way back because I was concerned that there might be a line at the sole Harris Ranch charger, and wanted to be able to skip it if I needed to. I didn't have to worry because I didn't see a single other Model S at Gilroy, Harris, or Tejon. Supercharging is awesome, just sitting in the car, you can watch the miles slowly count up. It's definitely longer than filling up a tank of gas, but it was kind of nice to be able to eat a leisurely meal knowing there's no rush getting back on the road again. If Tesla can really cover the country with these in the next few years, man, will that be fun.
There was no range anxiety, maybe a little range concern as I approached Tejon with 25 miles, but I didn't alter my driving habits at all. It's so fun to just hit the pedal and gooooo. The elevation climb through the Grapevine was the best. I would have the pedal to the floor on my old car and it would be groaning at 50 mph uphill, but it was like nothing for my S. I was whizzing by trucks and had to slow down below 70 just because I was passing all the other cars so fast. Of course, they all passed me later as I was collecting regen downhill.
The iPhone app is awesome as well. Great for checking your charge while you're hanging out at a restaurant waiting, and good for peace of mind to be able to see that I didn't accidentally leave the car unlocked. Will be great as they add more features.
