We got our car today!

Picked up the car today at the Fremont Factory.

My delivery window ended today. I last spoke to my delivery specialist on Monday, so figured I would call him today to ask what happens next. He called me back and told me the car was ready! He was out of town, but handed me off to another delivery specialist to take delivery of the car. He explained that no trucks were availalble, so we had to go pick it up at the factory. Fine by me! We spoke around 11am and arranged to pick it up at 2pm.

Time to verify funds, get the pink slip for the car, clean it out, etc. We traded in a 10 year old BMW and got low balled by Auto Nation, but we just wanted to get rid of the car. They obviously don't do many trade-ins as they were not sure what to do.

We forgot the camera, but got some cell phone pics if anyone can tell me how to load pictures?

We arrived at the factory and no one knew where to direct us to pick up the car. We finally found the location and were offered a tour. It was great to see the factory at work. We had been for the drive, but only saw a small section and no one was working at the time. There were many cars waiting for final inspection, and some waiting for missing parts. But many beautiful cars. The factory looks very modern and seems to run very smoothly.
We next got the overview of how to work everything...after signing all of the paperwork. All I could think of was I want to drive this car! We finished and left the factory to rush hour traffic and a slow drive home.

We drove this evening to Saratoga from San Jose and back home and had about 150 miles left in the battery. Everything is pretty simple to navigate in the car, but we were glad we both were there for the review because as we tried to do things with the controls while driving home, we forgot half of what we learned.
This car is fun to drive! The acceleration is amazing and the car is very smooth. The only issues we had is it is a big car and I was afraid to park it. I currently drive a Prius so it feels way bigger. I also am afraid to leave it anywhere.

We are happy to have the weekend to drive it around. I know eventually the newness will wear off, but I don't see it happening any time soon!

Congrats, sueinsanjose!

If you don't mind, how much lower was the Autonation trade-in offer compared to the KBB value or Carmax value, etc.?

(Front license plate doesn't look too bad.)

Unless I had the wrong Saratoga, CA, that is a 27 mile round trip. Was your car fully charged when you left? 177 miles seems like a little less than the 265/300 expected. What were your driving characteristics?

EDIT: I assumed 27m round trip from San Jose to Saratoga and back. Didn't realize you included Fremont in there.

It doesn't say anywhere that they charged after coming home from the factory, and we don't know where the start and stop points are in San Jose or Saratoga. Measuring just straight line from the center of all three cities (Freemont, San Jose, Saratoga) you get 45 miles. When you factor in that it started with a standard charge (as opposed to a range charge) it wouldn't take much movement off of the centerline numbers and aggressive driving to result in only 150 miles left on a standard charge.

Awesome looking car! Congratulations. A couple questions, if you don't mind. How fast did the line seem? You mentioned parts missing in final assembly, were they all the same part or random miscellaneous parts? Congrats again.

Thank you! I can't really say how long it would take to build a car. There were many cars in the lot outside the service area (above) and in the factory near the inspection area. The tour guide mentioned that they had cars waiting for missing parts, but I am not sure what parts. I think there must be certain things missing that are delaying certain cars. Maybe that is some of the variation in which cars are being released?

We also wonder if delivering the cars is difficult as there were a lot of cars there that looked complete (maybe 20 sitting in that lot)? But maybe there was a plan for delivery for all of them, we did not ask.

We were offered $7k from a private party and turned it down because we thought it was low. Auto Nation offered us $5k. We estimated that is what they would offer and took it because of the convenience factor. We did not want to deal with showing the car and trying to sell it privately. It is a pain and we did not want to deal with it.

The car was not fully charged when we left the factory in Fremont. We drove in stop and go traffic to South San Jose. We then drove the other places mentioned. I think they advise charging it to about 80% most of the time, and then with the driving that is where we ended up. Keep in mind we just got the car yesterday, so we are trying to figure this out.

We tried charging it last night with a regular outlet and extention cord and it did not charge. We believe the extension cord was too long (it was a really long one) because there was a message saying it was too weak of a charge. So we now have it plugged in with the cord provided and will see if that works. The power charger we bought is on back order.

Precisely why I asked, and now it seems to have been answered.

Thanks for the update.

They recommend charging to 80%? Can you program this using the computer, or is this the "standard" charge mode? I ask since most will probably charge while sleeping or at work with no real way at present to monitor what the charge state is.

They recommend that you charge to 80% as it is best to prolong the life of the battery. There is a setting on the car to charge it this way, so you can set it up to charge to 80% and won't have to check it.

Here is an excerpt from the Quick Guide for Owners:

By default, Model S charges to the STANDARD charge level, which provides the fastest charging time and maximizes the life of the Battery by charging it to 90% of its full capacity.

With a small connector box to reduce wire size your electrician should be able to install a NEMA 6-50R where you HPWC is going and put a 50A circuit breaker for the 6-50 in place of the 100A for the HPWC. This will let you charge at 40A from the 6-50 with your UMC. This is a 6 times faster charge rate than you will get from a regular 120V outlet.

Good Luck!

I was invited to post photos of our newest Pride and Joy, so here she is! (And for good measure, the previous one too! :) )

The automobile reborne (AKA the death knell of the gas car).

My first impression was "Wow!"

My second impression was "Wow! Wow! ... Wow!!!"

I was a Ford guy. I was a Mustang Cobra maven. Now, all my cars are going to be Teslas!

Best to all!
