Manufacturer plates... So further testing I gather... Not a customer car, yet.

Nice.

But that is discouraging. I have a 9/12/2014 confirmed P85 order. It said the Performance versions had delivery priority when I ordered. My delivery window was December, then Late November and now back to second half of December. Here is the last communication from my DS as to my schedule. "There have been some major shifts in the production schedule that have affected all customers." That appears to be rushing to make some P85D's.

The anticipation is killing me. This Friday I am having a 14-50 installed in my garage.

That is annoying, but it is so worth the wait.

Agreed. I don't believe deliveries have started yet and this isn't a customer car. We've already had other sightings of a non-customer P85D.

I have therefore updated the thread title from "First P85D sighting" to simply "P85D sighting".

The related but off topic conversation that spawned from this thread went here: P85D styling not distinctive enough?

Guess what I found...?

So I just got back from the Costa Mesa showroom grand opening and check out what they had... I got to take a very long 90 second test drive in it. 0-60 launch up the street and one back.

It was incredible... I thought my P85+ was phenomenal but this was like a ride you would experience at 6 Flags! It was crazy fast.

The new seats are a huge improvement! If anyone is close stop on by and get a ride. I was told that when the actual text drive vehicle gets to the showroom people will still not be able to actually drive it. Tesla's policy will only let people get a ride by a Specialist.

EDIT: I just realized this is the same P85D that was sighted the other day... it's from Hawthorne and doing some visits to all the showrooms.

One of the reasons I moved my order to P85D was for the seats. In what ways were they an improvement? Comfort, support?

Great pics!

Overall comfort is way nicer... and the support is finally where it needs to be on the sides. I had the performance seats before and the new gen seats really keep you locked in. Sorry I can't describe it very well... but you won't be disappointed.

In regards to the center console I only got literally 90 seconds in the car and my head was slammed in the back of the seat for most of the time... LOL. I really didn't check it out as the carbon one (my interior) won't be available till after my 3 year lease is up at the rate these consoles are coming out. I will say that I understand how people kind of wish they hadn't gone with the console after they got them installed. It definitely takes away from the openness of the stock vehicle.

In regards to test drive policy... for now P85D will be purchased off the line with no test drives. My Specialist said when you buy a Ferrari or McLaren you don't get a test drive. I sort of chuckled... while the P85D is an incredible car it's still not quite the same apples to apples comparison to a McLaren or Ferrari. I also talked to the manager of the store and he said he hopes his P85D demo vehicle won't arrive at his shop for a while... he know's how many people are going to be upset when they are told no. He felt bad and mentioned that all these people took a huge hit in depreciation with the announcement of the D and now they won't even be able to test drive it. This was the same manager that assured me that the front bumper radar and new rear view mirror camera were strictly only on proto type vehicles and I wouldn't see them for at least a year. 5 days later the announcement was made in Hawthorne... but to his credit he went to bat for me and got me a good value for my P85+ trade in.

PS - I forgot to mention that the manager said there was P85D on a delivery tuck headed to San Diego... not sure if it was a Studio Demo Car or an actual car for delivery.

like i said, it totally makes sense, but i would hope that after an order you could at least go around the block in one to hold you over for the next few months. seems silly that right now i could call the culver city shop and ask for an extended test drive, to my house no less, and test the approch angle of my driveway. but... we cant go around the block under supervision.

maybe its for the tesla specialists personal insurance policy?

I agree 100% jerjozwik. If you have a deposit down it would be nice for you to at least take it around the block. The policy is definitely in place to protect the specialists safety. It's definitely not a vehicle you want available to every Joe Schmo walking in.

I will say even a ride in one for a few minutes should ease the painful waiting game.

goodness, i am so glad that i don't get those rear seats. those don't look comfy whatsoever.

Enza - they are surprisingly quite comfy. In my opinion way better then previous generation. The only issue as some have pointed out in the forum is the fact they may not lie flat with the side bolsters. I didn't have a chance to try that out.

I also forgot to mention that the front trunk is considerably smaller. Many have mentioned that you only lose that microwave space in the current frunk but it's considerably more space that just the microwave section. It's quite smaller now.

How many P85D's were there during the Hawthorne show ? Did they make some more after that ? I see one reaching Deutschland ..was it the same one from the launch show ? I am thinking those taking factory tour around thanksgiving might see P85D's in the making! Interesting times

Did you get a chance to see how many LATCH (the child car seat anchors) points there were?
