Paint: Multi-coat Red

The Oak Brook, IL store just sent me this shot of the red Model S they had for all of one day before it was shipped off to the Detroit Auto Show. It was parked in the mall's parking garage and under lots of (bluish) fluorescent lighting. I still can't decide.

Pure speculation on my part but I expect to see notifications in the third week of February assuming they start red production the first week of March. I'd be surprised if they wait until the first car hits the line as there will be a lot of paint testing before the first customer car is run through.

Went to the Menlo Park store yesterday and spoke with the rep, he said the "Sunset Red" color is NOT the same as the Multi-Coat Red color. Apparently they changed the color for production into a darker color, which is what the paint samples in all the stores show. Can anyone confirm?

I sent an email to George B about this. He replied that the colors are the same.

When did you send the email? I was told they changed the color just recently. The rep told me specifically that the picture on facebook named "Sunset Red" as part of the 10 colors album is NOT the production color for MCR.

He replied on January 16. Here's the email conversation:

HI rick.

Yes it is the same red. Can you send me the link to the question on TMC and I'll set it straight.

Thanks… George

George,

I'm sorry to bother with you with what is no doubt a trivial question but there's a discussion on the Tesla Motors site about whether the multi-coat red that will go into production on March 1 is the same as the Sunset red seen on the Get Amped tour cars. Some say it's the same, and I and several others are arguing that it's different. Can you set us straight? All of us with red on order are eager to know.

Thanks much.

Cordially,

Rick

How will Tesla notify us? Will something show up on the My Tesla page?

The "View Design" button will change to a "Delivery" button and I expect that an email will be sent as well. Note that, in my comment, I was thinking we'd be notified third week of February if production starts the first week in March. They could, of course, start production in the end of March and still stay true to their word.

Talked to Kunal (Configuration Specialist at TM HQ) today regarding another question on my S and asked him also about the color - he indicated it IS the Sunset Red, but just called Red now (or Multi-Coat/2013 Red). Also indicated that Red production is still scheduled for March, but didn't know any specifics on an exact date production would begin. Eagerly awaiting with the rest of our Red crew!

Great... I will continue to obsessively refresh the My Tesla page 8 - 10 times each day :)

I think we all agree that Sunset red = multi-red = red. My question however is- has this red changed color? The sales lady said that the red used to have more orange in it and now it's a much darker red. The sample on the wall looked very dark. Are the pictures I have seen in this thread the new darker red or the older more orangey red?
