I thought the car will not lock if the phone is inside the car (and setup as a key)? o_O
Based on my experience the other day, it will indeed lock. And since the phone is still nearby, it will happily unlock for anyone who tries the door. That was good for me. Not so good had it been a bad guy.

It's possible the car locked because of a glitch with Bluetooth on your phone and not because of an issue on the car. When I first got my Model 3, I was using a 2 year old phone (Nexus 6) that caused all sorts of phone key issues. After upgrading to a OnePlus 6T last year, all of the issues went away.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. The most likely scenario is the Bluetooth glitch that David L mentioned. I have an Iphone 5 that is at least 7 years old it is seriously slowing down. Now that I have a new M3 it is time to get a new phone - smiles.
