Parking at SeaTac airport

On a long trip away, ideally you’d plug the car in and set it to maintain a 50% charge until 2 days before returning. Then use the app to remotely charge to 90%. I’d be furious if someone unplugged me even though it appears I was finished charging.

The lights on the EVSE turn off when the car is locked? Certainly the charge port lights do, but I thought the suggestion was to look at the mobile connector - the EVSE. AFAIK, those lights stay on, and will be scrolling if the car is drawing power.

That’s right. SeaTac is all 110v outlets. People plug in their mobile chargers, which have the pulsing LEDs on the tesla ones. If they’re not pulsing, it’s not charging.

I only park in the airport garage for day trips (too expensive otherwise!), and will always plug the neighbor back in when I get back. So no worries about vampire loss.

In that situation, when your car is already charged, why wouldn’t you want to share the plug with someone else?

I know it's not relative due to the temperature difference, but when we arrived back in PHX the other day after our S sat in the parking garage for 12 days we were pleasantly surprised to see it only used 18 miles of range in that time- so only 1.5 miles/ day with local temps in the 50s We had Range mode on, and Always connected off as I said before YMMV. and certainly colder temps of the last few days would probably result in more usage.

Remember when I said that BEVs parked in EV spots and not charging I found more egregious than ICEing muggles. Well just a couple days ago, zero EV spots on 5 and this clown puncher

50s is a pretty good temp to be parked at. Goldilocks zone for battery :)

That car was probably unplugged by ScottyD!
Not this week or last! I easily found official spaces recently. But let me know if anyone wants to schedule some unplugging love (if already charged only) in the future

Also - just the outlet side get unplugged. Car side smartly stays locked :)

You guys are funny.

FWIW, I ended up just parking at a regular lot (Ajax Parking, no problems with them or the car in their lot) and left the car there for 5 days. It was cold and supposedly there was going to be snow, not that I saw any as I wasn't in the state. I charged the car to 100% before departing from my house that day. I left the car parked in the lot saying it had 191 miles left. When I returned, the car said it had 162 miles left. I turned Always Connected and Data Sharing off before I parked and flew away, otherwise I just left it there and did nothing else.

I would say that getting to the airport and back isn't an issue for me with my 90D. The trip distance between the airport and my house one-way is 70 miles according to Google Maps. So, about 140 miles round trip, plus 5 days parked, in roughly 30-40 degree temperatures. I also stopped at the market on the way home, an insignificant detour in terms of miles. This is with me driving normally, blasting the HVAC with cabin temperature set to 70 degrees. That was enough to get back home with 55 miles to spare. No problem.

Lol, happy to entertain. I’m happy your circumstances work for you. Mine can result in additional pucker factor if I cannot plug in for longer durations ;)

To entertain more, for these longer stays at airport I don’t have the range required as I’m a big believer in using data to help generate informed decisions let’s geek out on some data. (Thank You TeslaFi :) )

I pre heat cabin and charge to 80 and sometime 90% if I remember that I’m going to airport.
It takes 20% battery to get to airport from home, sometimes more dependent where I am and other tasks.
Unplugged, I regularly get drop of 2+ kW per day. That’s energy savings on, always connected on - I need to know if unplugged, or alarm goes off.
Trips are often 4-5 day duration, 3 times a year these are up to 20.
That math doesn’t enable enough power to make it home with enough safety buffer I prefer (10%).

Data:

Trip to SeaTac (this was for just a day trip, so didn’t worry about plugging in)

Here’s the vampire loss for a day in 55F garage. It is not that different for temps down to 35.

Here’s the driving efficiencies, for a range of temperatures, I get over a statistically significant set of miles ( all over min of 25) for this p85d:

We flew out of Seattle after a drive down from Vancouver. I thought we would have a chance at finding a spot at a long term charging stall at the terminal parking...no such luck November 10 to 17th. We charged as much as we could bear sitting at Lynnwood, I parked in the terminal and put the car in energy saving mode. I still went from 254 down to 204 KMs over the course of a week. I even resisted checking in on the car to avoid powering it up.
Lucky, we went straight up to Arlington, the car predicted I could have made it to Burlington with 6 percent, but I was not going to be chancing it with the cooler weather.
I am looking forward to something in Bellevue soon, it makes visiting Seattle (and Portland) for a weekend a challenge.

Ironically when I drive to Vancouver, I always find charging spots at the airport.

If you pay more to park on the 4th floor, you might have better luck with charging.

I know this is an old thread, but in case anyone searches and needs the info. I live in the area and travel a LOT. By far the best I've found is Seatac Park. They have 110V free EV parking. You can ask when you make reservation, but they usually have it free when you get there. They do military discount, earn free day discount, and discounts if you sign up in advance (40% off if you pay in advance 2wks early, 20% discount if you just make reservation in advance). Best price, easy to work with, and they give you a free water bottle. I used to park at another local place but got a big scratch on my car, that they denied (they valet it and move the cars around). Then my friend got a big dent on her trunk that they denied. That's when I switched to SeaTac Park a couple years ago and never looked back! I don't remember the name of the other place, but wrote a yelp review about our experiences on them.

Hopefully they will add more soon, as it is just a 120v plug which should be easy to add to another 50 spots. Heck but them on the 7th or 8th floor to get them out of the way a little more...

Those existing outlets are all against a wall for support and there aren’t many walls by parking spots in the parking garage at all. So they can’t add more outlets without a much more expensive installation. And given that they are free, the Port of Seattle would have to invest $$$$ without any return for their efforts.

BTW. There is a free level 2 charger a few miles from the airport if you need an emergency top up. At Southcenter Mall by the Macy’s north entrance. When I used it, it cut out around midnight but I got just enough charge to get me home one time.

There is a return in the form of opportunity cost. For example, I park somewhere else due to lack of charging. I do it all the time. They could be losing $150 per week per outlet with how popular they are. $4-8k per spot per year easily pays for the outlet install.
