My mother has a 2014 MS w/o tech package. I was pulling it forward tonight to move to a different parking spot and she stepped off the curb behind me. Keep in mind I was moving away from her. The parking brake locked so harshly that I thought for a moment I’d hit something with one wheel. I looked down and the car was in Park. She has reported that it has done the same when she’s been backing in to charge at home and the dogs are circling the car happy to see her.

The part that I can’t figure out is the car has no ultrasonic parking sensors. Is it using the backup camera to sense motion behind it? In my expierence tonight, I was pulling /forward/ from a parking spot we had backed into. She stepped down off the curb /behind/ the car that was moving forward (away from her) and it put the parking brake on.

What is going on here guys?

Do you have your seatbelt on when moving the car? No seatbelt and it will engage the parking brake as soon as you shift in the seat. That is the most common reason this happens.

...parking brake locked so harshly...

In 2012, it's been reported by a reporter who borrowed a Model S for the story and reported it as a bug and hoped Tesla would fix it.

It is not.

The reporter was not wearing the seat belt and that's what Tesla car's programmed to do.

It has not changed for the past 6 years.
