I received an email today with a VIN, MVPA (showing the car has 15 miles on it) and asking for payment now so they can schedule delivery ASAP (cash sale, no trade in). Is this normal to request payment in advance vs a day or so before delivery (or at delivery with a cashier's check at delivery)? Excited to be getting a car and don't really suspect that Tesla will take my $$ and run but I also don't want to pay and wait weeks or months for a car. BTW, last 5 of VIN is 12XXX. Black/Black, no FSD, AWD, hitch, 19".

This may be because you are in Vermont? Some states Tesla needs payment before (dealer license or something)... but in other places like California you can pay via personal check on delivery.

ill let other Vermont people chime in on Vermont specific deliveries.

yes, it’s normal.

The confusion and supply chain issues existed in the Model 3 deployment(they were worse). There are more people trying to buy the Model Y than there are Model Ys to supply.

Also, the supply chain to each State is different. If you’ve fully paid for the car, it’s likely you will be prioritized to receive it before fiscal quarter‘s end.

I will fully pay for the car before they give me an exact delivery day. For the Model 3, payment took a couple of days to complete and a trip to the bank with multiple signatures and a notary. It’s easier now on the Tesla Account page.

My VIN is 118xx and White (default color), so I guess yours will be made a few hours after mine.

If it reduces your stress to pay a day or two before your delivery date. Then stay comfortable. I’m OCD enough to pay a few weeks in advance to try and get it quickest. But your supply chain and mine are not the same.

There is no Tesla Service center in Michigan delivering new cars yet. Having a local Tesla Service Center seems to allow more flexibility and faster delivery (from many forum posts). If you have a local Tesla Service Center with a delivery specialist, call them and ask them when to pay and what they can do for you if you pay early.

Picking up a MY Blue/Black, 20" wheels in Burbank, CA. How does pay by check work with contactless delivery? While the website is asking for the balance prior to deliver, would prefer to do the exterior inspection first.

Please note that Michigan is a Tesla Unfriendly state, and the requirements to pay in full have to do with the actual delivery technically occurring before your car enters your state.

For more enlightened states, I recommend holding full payment until delivery (and after inspection).

@Thp3 - thanks for the info. I emailed with the person in Las Vegas and she said car is in production and I could wait until produced to pay. They still have to ship to NJ, do the prep work and then transport to VT (we have no service center here). Sounds like things are progressing and I’ll pay when produced.

Tesla cannot sell direct in CT, so I had to pick it up in NY and paid the amount due the day before I took delivery. That being said, I did not SIGN the paperwork at the delivery until I saw the car and inspected it for 45 minutes. The associate who helped me was completely cool with that. Once pictures were taken, etc, then I signed the final 2 pieces of paper and drove off!
