Petro Canada, formerly a state-owned oil company in Canada but now part of Suncor, becomes the latest oil company to get involved in electric vehicle charging.

They are starting to deploy their own electric vehicle chargers at gas stations – and they are not kidding around when it comes to the charge rate.

<snip>

Now Suncor is also getting involved and they have deployed their first ‘Petro Canada-branded’ EV chargers at a gas station n Milton, Ontario.

Interestingly, the company is deploying some serious power – unlike what many third party networks have been doing in the past.

Local EV owner Luke Chau stopped by the station and reported back to Electrek:

“There are two stations. Each station has two plugs. The CCS has a label 200 kW and the CHAdeMO one is 100 kwW So far they are testing and getting feedback so there is no cost to charge. I only have a 2018 leaf so can’t tell if the 100 kW is true as the Leaf’s max charge rate when the temp is not too hot is 45 kW.”

Yeah, I’ve been by that location a few times while they were setting the chargers up, nice to see them finally functional.

Electrek might be jumping the gun a bit regarding a rollout since Petro only had 5 stations in Ontario that had (free) Level 2 chargers, so they’ve got a long way to go before they start truly rolling out their own charging network. It’s a start though...

Maybe? Would make road trips a lot easier if each gas station/ON Route had a few high power chargers. Mash the peddal for 200kms... charge for 15 minutes while taking a break. Repeat :)
Honestly, screw OnRoute. They had a big charging plan in the works around 2015-2016, but all that ever came out was a wall charger around Cambridge. I think it would be the best thing to have chargers at OnRoutes

The OnRoute issue has been discussed here before and there may be an issue with many of these locations being at the skinny end of the grid and therefore requiring expensive retrofits to have many SuperChargers requiring several MW of capacity.

Aren't SuperChargers much faster than Chademos? Why would Tesla owners bother since the OnRoute stations are primarily on the 401 corridor which is already pretty well served with SCs? And the SCs are free for many of us.

Doesn't hurt to see more charging options along the corridor to Montreal. I'd make the effort to stop into town instead of the OnRoutes for good food or an attraction/break. The food choices at OnRoutes aren't exactly stellar :)

CHAdeMO is slightly below what an Urban Supercharger would give you for the default config and the same as a regular Supercharger on the special plug. The main advantage is that it's an open standard that is accessible to more people/organizations and hence in theory would be more plentiful in terms of locations. Superchargers are only installed by Tesla.

I’d bet the next Petro-Can fast charger will be at the Kingston stop. Definitely would be practical to highway drivers due to the recent relocation of the Invista Centre DCFC charger to Downtown
