Pick-up At Austin Ponds 09/14/18

In hopes of allaying some fears, I wanted to post this to detail my pick-up experience yesterday.
I arrived at the delivery center in Austin about 30 minutes early. The parking lot was a labyrinth of Model 3's. There was not one additional parking space to park my car. If you use this delivery center try not to go around to the back. It is almost impossible to turn around if there are available spots. The best strategy if there are none available is to hover in the front area until a space becomes available. The deliveries are scheduled every 15 minutes. They have more cars then they could deliver then if they remained 24 hours a day. Each weekday they receive an additional delivery.
The front desk personnel welcomed me in and took the keys for my trade-in. All paper work had been completed as per Texas deliveries. I then went to the rear waiting area that provided water and coffee. My delivery specialist met me on arrival also and went to find my car. After a 20 minute wait he appeared in the waiting area. He said that he had located the car and the pre-inspection was complete. He explained the new policy of a two day Grace Period. The new policy allows the recipient to take the car home and report within 48 hours of delivery any defects that they notice or if they are completely unsatisfied with the car and demand either a new car or a refund. The customer is to call the The Tesla Customer Support with there findings. The delivery specialist was very candid he said there is just not enough time to inspect and record defects at delivery. Also defects detected by a road test will not be detected by the pre-inspection.
The car a white/white P3D+ looked fine to me. It was raining, the car was on a delivery bay made the feasibility of performing a complete inspection unlikely. The delivery specialist sat in the car with me and we programmed several of the automatic functions. I had read enough from the Forum entries and the manual that I was confident I could at least drive home. Overall the delivery process while brief was sufficient.
I kept the car in chill mode for about a block and then went to performance mode. Better to learn now then later.
The car rode exceedingly well. The handling was by far better then my trade-in, a 2017 Audi S-6 and on par with my favorite1996 air-cooled 911S. When I arrived home I checked the air pressure of all the tires. My experience is that dealer's prep almost always miss fills the tires. Recommended tire pressure is 42 lbs. At one hour after returning home each tire measured between 42 and 43 lbs.
Today under bright illumination I carefully examined the exterior and interior finish. There were a few areas that required some wax. There maybe an asymmetric gap in the trunk alignment by 1-2 mm otherwise everything else appears perfect. I received an update last night and I am charging the car without any problems.
I apologize for the length of this review but I thought it might help those who are getting skittish about the delivery process. I was a first day reservation holder and like others in Texas I was cancelled once for delivery. My point is that at least in my case the wait was worth it.
My advice is to be prepared at delivery. Know the questions you plan to ask and delay the process if you feel rushed.

Thanks for the review! My delivery is tentatively scheduled for 09/28 (which I don't trust), also for a Pearl White P3+. So it's good to hear about good experiences at Pond Springs.

I'm curious - what is your VIN #? Do you plan to have them fix the imperfections you found?

One thing to note, and I read this in another thread: the 2 day guarantee comes with some caveats. You have to create another order, which means you will lose any of the time limited incentives like free premium connectivity, free supercharging, lower paint and delivery prices etc. So it's not as a good of a deal as it sounds at first. I plan to fully look over my car in detail before leaving.

Hope to see you there, CrazyCoconut! I got my notification yesterday and was honestly shocked - not that I finally got an invite, but at the level of... professionalism... in the e-mail. I honestly didn't believe it (figured it was a scam or joke) until I checked my Tesla account and the date matched up. Murphy must be doing the scheduling because, of course, I'm headed out of down for business so I can't do most of the work needed to correct the errors in the e-mail until late next week. On top of that, my IDA send this at the end of their work week, so I won't get any solid updates until at least Tuesday. 9/28 seems unlikely. Hopefully it won't push off my delivery by more than a couple of weeks.

If I get rescheduled (based on what I'm seeing on the forums, that's likely) does anyone know if that will mean a week or two, or am I talking months in the queue again?

@rluciano also has a 09/28 delivery appointment at Pond Springs, so maybe we'll all see each other there :)

I think you can push back your deliver by up to a week. Then after that, you lose your car and have to be rematched with another car. That could take another 2-3 weeks, possibly longer due to the known logistics issues with getting the car from CA to TX. I would avoid having to rematch as much as possible.

Glad to hear this description. Honestly, this is a pretty sensible choice by Tesla. The percentage of cars with serious defects is small -- but creates some major headaches -- and it makes sense to process them "out of band", separate from the delivery process.

Do they have Wifi in the waiting area? My third appt is for tomorrow at 5pm, but I live down south, so there's no way in hell I'm leaving my house at like 3:30-4 to get there near 5. So I plan on heading up pretty early and I was going to try and work from the waiting room, provided they have Wifi.

How accurate was your delivery date for Austin, TX? My delivery advisor said the website lists a date, but not to trust it. My date is 9/25 for a P3D-.
My delivery date was correct. I had checked on the Trucking transit report with my car's vin and found that the car had arrived 4 days prior to my delivery date. Check the previous threads on how to determine if your car has been transported by truck and if so arrival date.

I thought you can only check status if your car is going by rail via United Roads? According to my IDA this morning, my car apparently is on a truck on its way to my local Service Center. Wondering if we will make my 09/28 delivery...

United Roads is transport by truck only. That is where I checked. My first delivery was cancelled as it was a railroad and truck delivery. Delivery by truck only is more reliable.

Pond springs is a nightmare. I really feel for the employees there. I updated my iPhone yesterday which screwed my voicemail up through a delay. At 3:30p I received a voicemail from Tesla saying that my car was ready to pickup at 1:30p and to call if that wouldn't work. Of course, they didn't leave a number. I reached out to my DA who scheduled my for 4:15. It turns out it was for my wife's X and not my 3 (long story short, wife's 3 totaled, upgrading to X while I 'upgrade' my S85D to a P3D-).

The lot is completely full. I had to pull in my S mirrors to get through off the feeder road. I ended up parking on the grass on Pond Springs itself. Despite picking an X up, they didn't have a lot of time to spend with me. The guy I was working with said their not getting any more resources or space - so no other lots. There are no signs of the deliveries slowing down. I don't know how they can scale Austin up this way. The guy I was talking to sounded to be on the edge of tears it was so busy. He has been getting a LOT of customer flak.

Fortunately, I made it easy for him and was very considerate. They don't really let you checklist the car anymore. You basically have to sign to pick it up and have 72 hours to detail issues for them to resolve.

My P3D- should be delivered by Tuesday, but my DA said it's enroute and most likely will arrive earlier.

Thanks for the Review, our Pond Springs appt is tomorrow (Wed) and we are planning on getting there early as well. I've been hearing that parking is a nightmare and we are going to be bringing two vehicles. From PS, the M3 is going straight to the Shop that's doing our paint correction and PPF work. Perhaps, I'll drop one of our vehicles off at the Detail Shop first, so that we are not using up more spots than we need at PS.
