Picked Up The New P100D Today....Have Some Questions

Thanks for your input.....I can see how the noise could be an inverter. I can't imagine being able to make an all electric car without having some sort of electrical noise. It is just part of having an all electric vehicle I guess.

I never knew about the foam lined tires. I wonder if it would be possible to get the stuff over the counter and adding some extra foam? I have the Michelin tires, 19" and the rubber is extremely hard. Compared to a sport tires which typically have a much softer compound. The softer compound comes at the expense of mileage. Typically about 50% less tread life when using a true spot tire.

Does anyone know what model tires come on the upgraded $4,500 wheel package. I would like to compare the rubber compounds used on standard vs sport.

Thanks,

Be sure to have your rear seats up as it muffles the road noise as well

Okay, I figured out why the road noise from my tires are so bad:

1) Standard tire and wheel combo is the 19" wheel with Michilen Primacy tires. The Treadwear rating on the tires is 500.

2) Upgraded tire and wheel combo is the 21" with Continental Sport Contact 5. The treadwear rating on these tires is 240.

Treadwear ratings go from 0 to 800. 0 represents a tire that is a total soft race tire. Tires under 100 have such a soft rubber compound you can actually stick your fingernail into the rubber. Although the Treadwear under 100 typically get less then 3,000 miles out of them. They are typically used for drag racing. So, the Continental tire rated at 240 is a fairly soft tire which will ride more comfortable and will keep road noise to a minimum.

On the flip side the Michilens at 500 are very hard. They will be a rougher ride and produce significantly more road noise when compared to the Continentals.

When doing a search on the Michilen Primacy MXM4 tires the one consistent thing that was mentioned in most reviews was "they are noisy"

Good Luck To Everyone!!!

You lose 10% range with 21' wheel.

WOW, 10%........I would have thought more like 3%-4%. That is a crazy amount of loss. They should be offering the gray 21" rims in a 19" w/wider profile tires. The tire size on my P100D is way to narrow. When looking from behind it actually looks a little odd to me. I wish the 19" rims could accommodate a 275 width tire. That would look really nice on the back in my opinion.

Thanks for the info.

We picked up our P100D today in Chicago. What an incredible car!!! I didn't even put the car in Ludicrous mode, still crazy fast. Overall the delivery specialist was very nice. She seemed very knowledgeable and sat in the back seat while my wife and I sat up front. She went step by step through all the screen functions. So much info to remember.......I expect it will take a couple weeks of driving to get more comfy with everything.

There was one problem we had. There is a scratch that is about 2" long right in the middle of the rear bumper. It runs from side to side and can't be buffed out. They apologized and sent me a text as soon as they noticed it while prepping the car. I just don't know how well they will be able to touch it up. They are going to make arrangements for me to bring it back when they have a tech person that specializes in this type of work. They gave both my wife and I very nice winter jackets as an I'm very sorry gift (which was very nice). I guess I will just wait and see how good they do with touching it up.

A couple things I noticed on the car and don't know if this is normal? Anyone have any info on #1 and #2 below? Or opinions on what I should do about the scratch situation?

1) There seems to be a little bit of very high pitched noise from time to time when staying at a constant speed or slightly pressing on the gas peddle. It isn't obnoxious but noticeable from time to time with everything else turned off. Anyone else ever notice anything like this?

2) After getting out of the car in the garage and closing the door I heard a noise that kind of suprised me. After about ten seconds after the car shut down there was a fairly loud noise that sounded like plastic gears grinding? Should there be any noises with the car shutting down?

Oh, not sure if it is on the checklist for what you should be looking for when picking up your Tesla but check the steering wheel. I didn't notice because I was to wrapped up in the whole "I can't believe I am picking up a Tesla P100D" but the alignment is off. While driving straight down the road the steering wheel is tilted about 3%-5% off center to the left. I noticed because the T in the middle of the steering wheel was tilting to the left. So, make sure to check that the T is straight up and down when the front wheels are facing straight ahead.

Thanks For Any Help!!!
I was suppose to pick up a new p100d end of december, but at last minute my DS called to say the same thing : bad scratch front bumper. I assumed the worse, and asked if it was a moderate or mild fender bender ! He finally came out and said.... mild, they were replacing the front bumper.... well, i said given that it will be a damaged new car, i am refusing that car and now they are doing a new built! I wonder how the tilted steering wheel might be related to the front bumper deep gash...?

Mine was the rear bumper so no relation to the steering wheel being off a slight bit.

I tell you one thing, I just wish that people would just be honest about things. Our sales person told us he had found us a marketing car out of Texas on the last night you could order cars from out of region. The last night to still guarantee we would get it by the end of 2016 and still get unlimited supercharging for life. Well, that car was not meant to be and sold before we could buy it. Well, about an hour later the sales person called and said they had found another car out of Atlanta that met our needs/wants. The text I received said "found brand new" then the price. They said there was a showroom discount on the car. I asked why and they said the car had 50 some miles but would call to Atlanta to make sure there were no problems. I received a call back saying it was in perfect shape. So, we took the deal figuring they were just trying to close as many deals by year end as possible. The day we are riding the train in we get a text saying there is a scratch in the rear bumper. They would touch it up but it can't be buffed out. While the delivery specialist was sitting in the back seat of the car explaining the cars controls to my wife and I she said "what a great deal you got for a small scratch" I was quick to comment saying the showroom discount wasn't for the scratch. Or, at least we were never told it was. So, we were told they would touchup the scratch. I sent an email to the DS pushing back telling the sales person that we didn't pay $150k for a car with a scratch in it. The DS emailed back saying what did you think you were getting the showroom discount for? That is for normal wear and tear on the car. I said a scratch was never discussed and if I would have known about it we would have never said okay to the car. They already had our $2,000 non refundable down payment. We called service and I explained about the scratch and I was told to drop it off and they would send it to the body shop they use. They would need the car for 3-4 days. Okay, so I dropped it off yesterday. When we came in the service person said the body shop person was coming over last night and they would get a quote. I told my wife who was with me if they come back saying we have to pay a dime I will be pissed, and refuse. I guess I will have to go up the chain of command. As I explained to the sales person, you can't tell me the car is brand new then tell me there is a scratch that you will only use touchup paint on. Well, it is a small scratch. If I couldn't tell the scratch was there I would be okay. Anything short of not noticible I will be talking to upper level people. On top of that We will not be getting the model X we were thinking of this summer and will cancel our orders for two model 3s.

Sorry for such a long post.....I am just pissed that on a $150k car the sales people would treat this like it is my problem. Clearly they should take care of the car the right way.

If it was sold to you as an inventory/new then the car should just as good as a new car, period.

For instance, I noticed a ding when I picked up my inv car and made a note of it on the paperwork. I dropped it off later when the body shop they used had a slot available and there was never a question of who was going to pick up the tab (i.e. they did.)

Good luck. I'm confident that it will be taken care off once it's moved up the chain, but clearly should shouldn't have to.

As I read your account, I was thinking that sounds like the sort of people I dealt with over a year ago. I then saw that you are from Chicago and understood why. I got fed up dealing the Chicago guy and had my order changed for delivery out of Cincinnati. So much better. They delivered the car in a covered carrier right to my driveway and where outstanding with all communications.

Thanks for your Input......I guess I was just thinking when you are stepping up and paying this kind of money service from all sides would be much better. I really liked how our sales person kept in contact with us after we first visited the Chicago location. At that time we test drive the X. Then about a week later the sales person called to see if we had any questions. I told him we wanted to test drive the model S because of the longer range and the better performance. I have raced cars as a hobby off and on and love the rush. I told the sales person we didn't have any plans to be back downtown anytime soon because it was about a 1.5 hr drive for us. I mentioned we were going to be in the Highland Park area doing some shopping and the sales person said we could stop by the store in Highland Park and drive the S. They made all the arrangements and we just showed up and drove. I later found out that the sales person had actually sent a loaded S P100D up to the Highland Park store. They wanted us to be able to feel the drive of the P100D, not a P90D w/Ludicrous mode. Since the P100's were just starting to be available at the stores for test driving, only one here at the time. The sales person sent it to Highland Park. This is what I expected service wise when considering spending this type of money. It was a very nice thing to do and we really appreciated it very much. Now it seems as if it is a totally different situation. Well, the sale is over and we are moving on to the next people.

I would have liked to just have them say sorry but there is a scratch in the bumper. Why don't we have you sign the paperwork and we will send you home with a loaner and we will get the scratch repaired. Or, we can drive you home would have been fine too. But to just say we will have our body people Use some touchup paint is just crazy at this price.

I really think Elon Musk should take some time to browse this board. I have read that I am not the only one with this type of problem. He has built such a wonderful amazing car/s. Now he just needs to bring other parts of the company up to the same level as the cars.

Thanks.....I agree, I now wish I had taken delivery in Highland Park. Do you remember who you dealt w/in Chicago? From what I have heard from others turnover has been an issue at that location. I just heard they currently don't have a sales manager. Maybe if they did this would have run much smoother.

Thanks for your comment.
