Elon recently mentioned on Joe Rogan's podcast that buyers would be able to pick up their Cybertruck from Giga Texas. Has anyone heard or looked into if this is an option at Fremont for the new plaid S and X?

Should be possible, ask your local Tesla folks. I know you still must pay shipping and destination fees, and won't save any money.

You also have to pay CA sales tax regardless of where you take the car after you pick it up.

Yes, it's the same for everyone, whatever you take delivery at the Fremont Factory, in Alaska, or Hawaii.

As Watts-up mentioned, it's true for everyone. A few states have a reciprocal agreement with CA, but most do not. If your state does not, you'll pay CA sales tax and your home state sales tax with no credit for tax paid to CA.

As far as shipping fee, it's always included in all new car sales as "destination fee" and is non-negotiable. You'll pay it regardless of where you pick up the car.

Not to be snide, but the first question that came to my mind was..."Why?"

OP might want to find out (from someone who's taken delivery in Fremont recently) what the experience is like picking up their Tesla from the factory in 2020/2021. If they're expecting something like what some of us have described from years past (factory tour, swag, etc.), I think it's very different now, especially with COVID. I think others have covered the financial aspects.

I was thinking about some European car companies allowing you to pickup a car at the factory,
provide a one month insurance and shipping to your home in US.

It would be kind of cool, though expensive, to pick up a future Plaid+ (or even Roadster) from the Berlin factory, drive it on the autobahn at 200 mph (over 300 mph) passing all those “slow” ICE supercars, and have a blast at the Nürburgring nordschleife before getting it shipped back stateside :D

wouldn't want to pay the ticket for speeding now....they have hidden cameras on the autobahn now and it dont make any difference....if your picture is taken you will eventually end up getting ticket....Ask me how I know....I was in rental car....business trip.....staying locally in hotel which I used for address.....hotel has you business info....five months after I returned, boss calls me in and presented me with the news....$575 fine....(company did not pay, hehehe)...

FWIW I absolutely intend to pickup the Cybertruck from Austin and possibly the Roadster from wherever.

In 2006 I picked up a Corvette Z06 from Bowling Green Kentucky with my dad. We toured the factory and afterwards they had our car waiting for us displayed in the Corvette museum across the street. It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Ahhh...2022 is going to be fun. :)

As others have said, picking up from factory in the middle of pandemic is likely not as fun as we'd hope so I won't look into it for my plaid MX but Roadster is definitely a different story! Hopefully by then things are back to normal.

We picked up our X at the factory--the delivery experience was not any more magical that picking up at the store. The one complication is if you need follow-up on the vehicle or there is something that needs tweaking, your delivery specialist will have to send the info to your local store and they will have to follow-up. When you take delivery at the store, Service can often come over and fix stuff or they can set up an appointment right there.

The cool thing about taking delivery at Fremont is taking the factory tour before or after delivery.

I would love to pick up my car from Fremont and drive home to Los Angeles. The new S is my first Tesla and first EV. Seems like it would be a nice trip to get acquainted with my new car.

I am nervous about making any changes to my order as I don’t want to create a delay. So I will wait for delivery to the Marina del Rey service center.
