Placement of ToughPro trunk mat

I'm interested in buying a frunk mat for my MX and it seems like ToughPro is the best value. Unfortunately they don't sell just the frunk mat by itself, the cheapest option is frunk/trunk combo.

So for the question: does the trunk mat have to go on top of the false floor of the trunk, or can it fit underneath in the lower storage area, where the UMC and tow hitch are kept?

That’s exactly what I did. Putting the trunk mat in the lower compartment is not a perfect fit because of the irregular shape/floor of that area. But it works good enough.
