Not long ago, I was one of the many whom would vigorously stand in defence of Elon Musk, through all the tribulations, verbal spats, petulant undertones, "moron" tourettes, and whatever issue of the day that would cut his ever so thin a skin. I would argue that this genius of the present was forever trapped in the mind of an adolescent boy, and thus he should be given a bit of latitude to grow, to change, to evolve. I often argued and still believe that he deserve the Nobel Prize for single-handedly changing an entire industry. It was not long ago that the auto industry walked and spoke in lockstep. Electrification was always 20 to 30 years out, it was not so far in the distant future they would promise and, yet they insisted that the infrastructure was neither feasible nor was there enough interest from the buying public for such developments, and even if there was, the technology was simply not at hand.

That is until someone put their money and their considerable knowledge to the test.

And yes, their money also meant tax payer funds, public investment, and a host of governmental policies and regulations that allowed a fledgling entity such as Tesla to even have a chance.

And thus when I invested in Tesla and bought their cars, I did so because the mission statement of the company aligned with my values. I overlooked Elon's shortcomings as a human being for the greater good. No, not merely my bank account, rather it was the mission Tesla was embarking on and how it would benefit all of mankind. I believed that then and I believe this still. Except now I can no longer excuse Elon's behaviour as some aberrant synapses of Asberger's manifesting in public view. Now he seems to relish every chance to act out his worst impulses, every pubescent retort, petty row, constant aggrieved posture against some injustice real of imagined, and his ever inability to actually be a man, and take the higher road. Now that his wealth has exceeded the limits of societal propriety, so has his inability to conduct and comport himself in any manner resembling a functioning adult. He can wail against what he deems socialistic or over-regulation or the ineptitude of bureaucracies, yet it was not long ago that he praised and greatly benefited from such policies that enabled him and Tesla to flourish. Not long ago, Elon spoke glowingly about countries such as Norway for their heavy handed mandates for electrification and sustainability.

Sadly what was once a limitless mind that promised such enlightening possibilities for all of mankind is now nothing more than a masquerading stunted teenage man with all the entrapped complexes and emotional limitations of a 7 year old misfit.

Months ago, I divested myself of my investiture and today I cancelled my order for the Plaid. I will soon sell our Model S vehicles, and I will miss the driving experience. I will not abandon electrification. I have placed an order for a Rivian and I will look to Volvo in the coming months. And whilst I was rarely on this site, I want to thank everyone for their assistance when I had a question and the general civility of this forum.

I do not expect that my words or sentiments will move many if anyone at all, nor will it affect Tesla's bottom line, yet every wave begins with a ripple.

Cheers to you all.

I am of similar mind. Elon’s recent praise of what appears to be some very unsavory characters has really tainted my view of him and, by association, Tesla.

Like you I dismissed his behavior in the past but for me the tide turned when he stomped his feet like a brat over covid in 2020, having declared that it would all vanish in a month or two. I know it’s more complex than that but while everyone was struggling, suffering, and dying, he was throwing a big temper tantrum. Then of course after building Tesla on the back of CARB regulations, credit exchanges, and state taxpayer EV rebates he declared California too oppressive and ran off to Texas. You know, the state that won’t let Tesla sell the cars it builds there.

After many years of enthusiasm for this company the candle is kind of burning out and it was finally cauterized for me by the trucker tweets.

I still like my car and I’ll probably just drive it into the ground but should I find myself in the market for a new car, Tesla will just be another choice on the list. I used to have some serious enthusiasm but Musk’s behavior is really starting to turn my stomach.

It’s a bummer but it was an exciting ride while it lasted (for me). I hope the company continues to succeed.

I was never a Elon fan but I would still buy a Tesla just like I still eat Chic Fli a despite what the controversies these huge companies are not just one man it is 100s of thousand And not everyone agrees with him. same with Bezos and Gary Ma ppl still using Ali Baba and Amazon this is no different.
its quite different.

elon rules and no one can argue with him. I've heard from people who worked with and under him. you dont want to be around that guy and working under him.

he sets the whole feel of the company and its rotting. its clear.

yes, a ceo who is toxic has that kind of effect.

and he's not just a beancounter, like many other ceo's are. he affects the direction of the tech and that's bad. he has lost his balance and clarity.

Elon's condemnation of government overreach is one of the few things I still like about him personally. Freedom, in my opinion, is of utmost importance. Giving up freedom for a false sense of security is a terrible trade.
His blatant lying about FSD and disregard of customer feedback is what bothers me most.

His politics have very little to do with decision to purchase or own Tesla vehicles (if anything they're positive IMO), but how he acts regarding those other things do.

Good luck with your future vehicles. The Rivians especially look cool and I am disappointed that they delayed the max pack, otherwise that was for sure going to be my next purchase.

Try running a business in California these past 10 years and you might understand some of Elon's evolving views and public statements. Lots of big Corporations have fled California over the last few years due to the debilitating tax and regulatory climate, but these CEO's are too cowardly to honestly admit why they are leaving lest they be cancelled for not towing the "correct" political views.

Elon has enough F-you money to honestly tell us what "he" thinks about things.

I find it very refreshing.

I couldn't have written the OP's post any more succinctly.
As a great fan of Musk since before the Roadster I hate to see how the company he still heads is preoccupied with video games and farts in the cars. It appeals to a small body of owners but the apparent lack of interest in customer support and real world driving is disturbing. FSD is "coming soon" - just like fusion power has been since half a century ago, and in the meantime the cars are increasingly being set up for it at the expense of the ergonomics of manual driving.

Not a good look.

Actually Video games and fart noises is genius. Ask any kid what his favorite car is. Bet you 90% will say Tesla. All the kids know the Tesla’s. The kids are all lined up to be the next generation of owners. And the kids are bagging there parents to get a Tesla. Elon planted his own advertising agents in every family house hold, for free. Just by some intern adding games and fart noises. Pure genius.

Also watch the Netflix series on SpaceX Inspiration 4. Another genius move.
