Tesla will now only release the VIN seven days prior to delivery.

They use to assign the VIN once the car was built. The time from VIN to delivery depends mostly how far you are from Fremont.

Haven't actually taken delivery yet (I don't count non-deliverable condition on date of delivery as an actual delivery), but I received a VIN on April 9, 2018, with most of the wait involving fixing cosmetic issues. Who knows if it's mechanically sound? I hope I can find out before the warranty expires.

I agree with you. I was looking at the data from the link the first person posted and it shows (depending where you're from) a average of 20 days from the date VIN was received. Thats data from the last 4 weeks

Definitely an outlier here, but from VIN to delivery was 8 days for me:
4/6: Invite
4/7: Config (Blue/19"/EAP), instant VIN
4/9: ISA Contact
4/13: Finalized financing and scheduled delivery
4/15: Delivery, papers show car was built in April as well

About two weeks ago. I am thinking 5/16 or 5/17 as the VIN tracking sheet went dark for a while around that time.
