Positive Post: 25k miles in and I love my S100D

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I've been reading a lot of negatively titled posts. I always remember that people only post on forums when they're having a problem. Tesla has sold hundreds of thousands of cars and we only see 2 negative posts per week at most? While I understand the rate of issues is probably higher than the rate of an established company, its still a very small percentage.

I wanted to share my positive Tesla experience. I bought an inventory s100d in April 2018 (car from Nov2017) and saved about $12k over new because it had 3k miles as a demo car. This was before the price drop. It was the most beautiful car I'd ever seen.

I then drove the car x-country when I moved from Boston to San Diego, supercharger to supercharger. I absolutely love how big and comfortable this car is. My wife does too. So does my dog who gets the whole back seat (yes I cover them). The autopilot made the trip SO much easier. The car is so fast I can't even imagine owning a ludicrous model. I maybe floored the car 2x in the year I've owned it. Its just so much power always available, never needs to down shift. Its just amazing to me.

I look at what the competition has to offer. The competition still hasn't caught up with the efficiency and range of a car that was developed in the back room of a rocket factory in 2011. Think about that. Even the new audi and jaguar (76 MPGe) doesn't even come close to the efficiency of the S (102 MPGe). Their range is significantly lower and they have huge batteries too. Even comparing to the X (93 MPGe) they're bad. And that's not even talking about the 3, which is 130 MPGe! Think about this - the Model 3 goes ~310 miles on less than 3 gallons of gas (assuming 75kwh battery and kwh/gal of 33.35. That's just mind blowing when you think there are so many people driving around with gas guzzling vehicles, getting in the single digits and teens with their pickups. They go 18 MILES on a gallon and the Model 3 goes 130!

My wife and I (and dog) take SO many more trips now. We drive up into the mountains and camp while sleeping in our car. We bought a fold up mattress that fits in the back with the seats down and put on Camper Mode. We hop in the car on a whim and drive to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo or Palomar Mountain or Julian or Temcula etc. etc. = almost every week.

My electricity provider SDG&E lets me charge at night from 12am-6am for only $0.06/kwh. That's enough time to always have a full car for next to nothing. I have free unlimited supercharging for life. I have solar, and enough of it that the equivalent energy in solar always goes into the grid making the car essentially powered off the sun. I love that I can charge my car up myself with energy I produce. Its just so amazing.

We also have a 2014 Chevy Spark EV which we bought in 2019. By the time we got it it had 15% battery degradation. It displays, at most, a range of 80 miles, but typically only 66 miles (driving habits affect its estimated range). My wife drives that car 78.5 miles once a week to work in Irvine. She arrives with ~5 miles of range and plugs in at a ChargePoint. That's pretty insane, but we just love electric vehicles. We really want a Model Y standard range; going to sell the Spark for it.

This was kind of a rant but just wanted to say I still feel the magic of Tesla and what Elon Musk is trying to do. I get that so many mistakes were made along the way, and he's terrible with timelines and broken promises. I think it would do everyone really good if we collectively calmed down about these upgrades to AP3 and MCU2. There's ALWAYS going to be something better or cooler. Even if we get the AP3 upgrade, AP4 is around the corner. Then what - we can't get that. Is AP3 going to be enough for people? No, they'll demand the AP4. Guys - AP1 and AP2 is amazing! Our cars drive themselves. Slow down and smell the electrons because we have just incredible vehicles. I have an electric car that goes over 300 miles on a charge, is a sub-5 second 0-60 car, has a 17" screen, and basically drives itself. I honestly couldn't ask for more.

Thank you for sharing your story. We bought a M3 in 2018 and love it. We then bought a CPO MS in 2019. Now my family go with all electric car. Will never go back to ICE. :)

"...the magic of Tesla and what (Steve Jobs)..."

(cringes)

No, really, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your purchase. Hopefully you will not have to experience the systemic issues Tesla brings to other owners who were as excited about their car as you are.

This is a welcome thread! I've been a car buff since I was a kid. My first car was an old Hudson, which dates me a bit. Four years ago a neighbor had a visitor with a Tesla S and I went to look at it. He asked my if I'd like to drive it and I was totally hooked. Every time my husband asked me what I'd like for my birthday, Christmas, anniversary, or any other event, I said a Tesla. It became a family joke. Finally last year (2018) for Mother's Day he asked me what I'd like to do, and I gave him the usual answer. Imagine my shock when he said, "Lets go buy a Tesla." We ordered it that day and took delivery of our S100D in June. I really love driving again, even in the nightmarish Bay Area traffic. We've had little difficulties, but so far nothing that a MCU reboot hasn't fixed, at least temporarily. It's all I had hoped for and so much more.

Like most on this page, can't agree more, my 2015 P85D is the most beautiful and astonishing car I have ever owned and I plan on being buried with it! I would never have bought an ICE Maserati or Jaguar or Ferrari because they are just very very expensive versions of a zillion other cars on the planet and don't do anything much different, just more expensively. My P85D is as or better looking (IMHO), as quick or quicker, silky smooth and growing every day. It is like I have lived with it through kindergarten and now it is in primary school and still learning stuff. Only 6 months ago it decided it could control speed around corners on suburban streets where I live so now I can largely drive around town without needing anything but the steering wheel. And every time I get in it it feels even silkier smooth than the day before, i.e. I just LOVE it. And, at least in Australia, and at least until Elon's latest round of cost cutting, Tesla service and support has been fabulous. What worries me most is Tesla going under and being left with an orphan, but I figure there will be after market specialists who will pop up if that happens since there is now a critical mass of S, 3, X & Ys in the world. Let's hope Elon stops playing in every play pen he can find and concentrates on making the best cars in the world profitably. 2017-07-10 16.37.24-1.jpg

Great post. I’m not at ALL technical but read many posts on this site. We live in Tasmania Australia, and were the first few to receive our right hand drive model S in may 2015. We STILL don’t have a Tesla supercharger in the state,(come on Tesla!) yet we love love our car, and have a deposit on a right hand model 3. We can drive to most places in the state but rely on destination chargers to get home, so you’re living on easy street!. Still we wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks from a Tassie gal.

Great thread. My two Teslas have been my best cars ever by a wide margin and I’ve owned a bunch. They have been so good that I had no problem plunking down for the Roadster because it’s worth lending Tesla a ton of money to be early on the list. Doubt I would have done that unless my experience had been so great thus far. Loving my 100D (even more than the P85D) and I’m sure the Roadster will blow me away.

And what I wouldn't give for 6c/kWh off peak, you Americans live in Nirvana!

I also absolutely love my '18 SP100D and have had not had to go to a SC yet (although I do have yellow screen and hard acceleration rattle). I could not go back to an ICE. I do however feel badly for the , IMO ,high number of people who are having issues with their car and are being unfairly dealt with by Tesla and those people who have to wait months for parts. Their plights do not stop me from enjoying the hell out of my car but I feel compelled to give them serious consideration.

Ditto! We’ve had a 2016 90D and now a 2018 100D. I guess one can start to get used to the instant power, the smooth power curve, the regen braking, no gas, the amazing google map, music on the fly, no gas, the enormous sunroof, cavernous space, gorgeous looks, no gas, clean lines, awesome handling/suspension, futuristic interior oh and no gas

Thank you for reminding us what we have right in front of us every day. Be blessed Familia Tesla...we’re fortunate to own a piece of humanity’s modern innovation and creativity at its best :)

Navasrin, I have a 2016 90D also and love it, too. Would you please compare the 2018 100D with the 2016 90D. I am thinking of going for a newer model to get some of the newer hardware. I would hate to give up the free supercharging, tough to I have not used it that much to date.

Woody,

There's free Supercharging on new inventory, so that would solve that issue!

Sure! First let me note the 2 configs:

2016 90D, MCU1
Pre facelift
AP1, coil suspension, premium, sub zero, hifi
Black Multi pattern seats, sunroof, 48 amp
Ocean Blue
21” turbines
Free SC

2018 100D, MCU2
AP2, air susp, premium, subzero, hifi,
Cream vegan leather, sunroof, 72 amp
MC red
21” arachnids
Free SC

I’ll try to break it down:

Driving Feel:

The 90D had a slightly tighter steering response.
The coil suspension was slightly harsher than the air susp and usually sat mid way between the normal to low setting on air susp. However I do mis the clip suspension as the 100D feels a bit more ‘boaty’ on higher speed turns than the 90D did. For day to day driving the air susp is a better ride. Handling wise almost the same but for the arachnids being much lighter.

Performance: 90D had a 0-100kmh of 4.4 sec. The 100D uncorked is around 3.7/3.8. Definate stronger pull on the 100D all around but overall, not that much of a diff as compared to a P100D.

Interior Finish:

To be honest, the fit on the older 2015/16 VIN’s were a bit better than today’s MS. I suppose priority is now the 3 so it’s been a few more rattles and trim fitment issues on the 100D than on the 90D.

90D has alcatera dash....miss it a lot.
Tech wise, all cars are software updated so both would be identical except for MCU3 and AP2.5.
100D Center console is nice but wife misses the open yacht floor for purse, bags etc. There are times I wish the console was removable.

I miss AP1 sorely. AP2 has always been full of bugs and drives drunk compared to AP1. I regret giving up the 90D for this reason. I miss the days of confident AP1 and not worrying abt phantom braking, weird lane shifts etc.

For software speed, I’m on MCU2 now but can’t really speak to the speed difference. When the 90D was running the older Version 6 software, it was plenty fast anyway. On the new version I have no idea how it is now. Does MCU1 run slow with newer versions?

Range wise...the 100D 90% is at 489km vs the 90D 410-412km. Quite a difference. I do find the degradation of the 100D to be far less over this last 10 months than I had with the 90D.

Originally the 90D at 90% was 425km. Reduced to 410km within 1 yr.

Originally the 100D at 90% was 492km and now after 10months, 489km.

Charging at 72amps Definately quicker however since I charge overnight, it makes no practical difference for me.

All in all, the cars are basically the same.
Unless you want FSD over AP1, I wouldn’t say it’s worth the shift unless your going to the P100D and getting free ludicrous.

The reason we upgraded was a crazy good trade in on the 90D and the 100D was an inventory car with low km and more than 25k off the price. Made my lease payments actually cheaper on the 100D when all calculated out. Plus at the time, there was a 14k govnt rebate which also sweetened the deal. $ aside, I miss that 90D!

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your post!
Like everybody here, I want the Tesla experiment to succeed. Between the LA Times and TMC there are a lot of slings and arrows to be born!
My X is about 2 1/2 years old and has 11,000 miles or so (My business vehicle is a hauler so the X is a weekend car.) It had some teething issues but hasn't been in for service or repair for 2 years! (One setback was a flat tire. No spare, flatbed tow, a little late to the wedding.)
Other than that, I look forward to driving it any chance I get. It's always exciting to see there is a software update.
I just wish the company looked more viable so I could recommend the cars more confidently. And seriously plan on a Model Y...

The company is just fine. Have a look at this video:

Navsarin, That helps alot!!! Thank you very much. I think I want to keep the 90D now. I bought it used from Tesla with 16000 miles. It; is pristine. It has the yacht floor, but my wife would prefer a console -- go figure. I had figured the Full Self Driving with AP2 hardware would be better than AP1. I would like the longer range. My range was 274 miles when I purchased it, so after three years the range degraded from 295 to 274, which is 8%. That was a little disappointing but understand not that atypical.
Thanks again.

Great post! I have an early 2013 Model S P. I bought it new and included an extended warranty, back when those things existed. It is low-mileage (currently about 39,000). Here is the amazing thing: Until this year, when I paid for a nav. upgrade, I have spent zero dollars except for tires. Yes that is true. I have never had a bad service experience (San Diego area). There were 2 rover visits and about 2 shop visits. The biggest things that were ever done were a motor replacement due to "milling noise" about 2 years ago and a screen replacement about 3 years ago due to edge bubbling, both on warranty. The motor was done in 1 day (!) since the motor was a stock off-the shelf item and was an easy unbolt bolt-in job. Needless to say I was flabbergasted when told the car would be ready in the morning. What? And it was. Say that for an ICE car!

Coming up on 36,000 miles on my June 2016 S75. A car crashed into the front driver's side quarter panel when only four months old and took quite some time to repair. Hoping parts supply chain is more efficient now. Despite that setback, I have never experienced any problems with this car. Not so much as a squeak or a rattle. Driving it is one of the highlights of each day for me. Hoping to go to 150,000-200,000 miles , then buy a new one with autonomous driving in 2028.
