This is good news.

What are "...generic DC Fast Chargers." mentioned by Tesla?
They are fast chargers that use a non-proprietary plug, the general standard today for new DCFC units/stations is to have both CHAdeMO and CCS plugs.

EV Charging Infrastructure Investment Proposal – Tesla
Councillors received a presentation from Evan Koebel and Iain Myrans of Tesla regarding a proposal to install up to 12 Level 3 electric vehicle chargers and up to 12 Level 2 chargers on municipal lands at no cost to the Municipality. Councillors asked clarifying questions and inquired about the development process for this proposal in regards to permits, licences and commercial use of public space.

Jasper EV Charging Project – ATCO
Council received a presentation from Nancy Li of ATCO regarding a proposed electric vehicle charging project for Jasper, which would be housed on municipal lands and require municipal funding, but would be operated by ATCO. Councillors asked clarifying questions about Level 2 electrical vehicle chargers versus Level 3 chargers, user fees and universal connectors.

Awesome! Nice to know that many more DC fast chargers are getting installed.

Hopefully, these chargers won't be behind a gate that is closed in the wintertime ... I've seen this recently with the COVID-19 shutdown on the West coast where the chargers in the parking lots of various visitor information centres have been inaccessible while the information centre is shut down.

Softcoder, really enjoyed the speed trip through Jasper and the Icefields to Field, I was planning on being in that area in August, but could not get into Canada from the US at this point, so will have to see what happens. It was nice to take that drive again even speeded up.

This was at July 7 council meeting for jasper. They seem to be really dragging this decision out.

Earlier this year, Tesla proposed the installation of up to 16 Tesla owned and
operated electric vehicle chargers on municipal lands. More recently Tesla
pitched an alternate proposal contingent on grant funding, which would also have
Tesla fund several generic charging connectors for all brands.
Since Tesla’s first proposal, councillors have discussed how this proposal fits with
the Municipality’s practices on commercial use of public spaces.
This item will return for further discussion and consideration at the next Council
meeting.

They seem to be really dragging this decision out.
This often happens when Tesla tries to put superchargers on municipal lands. The municipalities have a responsibility to protect universal access and usage of those public lands that is at odds with the supercharger's proprietary charging standard and restricted access. Plus Tesla invariably tries to structure all their supercharger leases so that they don't pay rent, so the municipality usually isn't being offered direct compensation for allowing that restricted usage. It's really not an easy decision and frankly I'm always a bit surprised whenever they decide to give approval at all.

Jaspers local paper said council approved the designated parking area for chargers!
Exciting news and hopefully this won’t take too long.

Here's the text of the item so that it is searchable by TMC:
EV location decided
Jasper could soon have a new set of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Last week, following discussions on private entities using public lands, Jasper Municipal Council voted in favour of designating the municipal parking lot on Connaught Drive, across from Robinsons Foods, as a location for the stations.

Council also authorized mayor Richard Ireland and chief administrative officer Mark Fercho to enter into agreements or grant funding requests required to install municipal or third party EV chargers and infrastructure at the approved parking lot.

Municipal staff are now working with Tesla, ZAAP Charge Inc. and the Town of Edson on potential proposals to install Level 3 EV fast chargers.

Good news bad news - that is a very busy place, and will be ICEd a lot. Perhaps almost all of the time. Perhaps by a few people that park in a charging spot and get on the train. Better than the lots next to the train station though...
