I've been eagerly waiting for my Model S. I confirmed my order on Apr 21, started production on May 12 and completed production on May 20. I received a strange email from my delivery specialist today. My car shows "in transit" on the mytesla website for the last 3 days. He wrote that the car is due to arrive at the Service Center next Tue (May 26). I was ecstatic to learn that the car was arriving a bit earlier than planned.

However he wrote "Normally I like to have the vehicle on site for three days prior to delivery to give us ample time to inspect and detail. Because of this, there may be a slight risk that we need to push back the delivery by a day or two".

This really sank my heart. I've heard that the Model S are put through rigorous QC checks before leaving Fremont. Is another 2-3 day inspection necessary after arriving to the Service center before I take delivery?? Is this normal? What should I do? Can I take delivery as soon as it arrives? Or should I wait the extra 2-3 days until the extra inspections are done??

This is normal. It goes through QC checks in Fremont, and then they QC it again after it has been trained and trucked across the US to make sure that nothing happened in transit. I'm told that they primarily are making sure that the battery is good since that is not something that is thoroughly checked before leaving Fremont, and that takes a few days to cycle. The Fremont tests are more performance tests while driving.

I too dislike the wait, but it's probably better than me getting it home only to find that the battery isn't up to par and having to take it back after I've already paid for it.

Even though it is painful, I would definitely wait. That way they are on the hook for any issues, even after you take delivery. If you don't let them check everything out, they could say it's you and not them.
