Power inverter question

Would this work in a Model S? I plan to only use it with the 12V plug inside the car.

We are planning a 5000km trip with 2 kids so I want maximum power to charge everything.

My first plan was this product but can't find it in Canada..

Before I did the hack above, I had these in all our cars https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wagan-Tech-2886-Cupholder-Adapter-6-2/42582633 and add one of these and you have 8 amps of power with 6 outlets

I'll bite..... since I recently installed a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter in my P85.

The max output from the 12 volt plug in your Tesla is 180 watts (12 volts x 15 amps). Your inverter is rated at 300 watts (although it is common for cheap inverters to have overstated specs). For electronics, a more expensive pure sine wave inverter is preferred to your square wave inverter. Your inverter has a tiny fan the will very likely emit a high pitch whine you may fine offensive.

I recommend that you find a 12 volt 'cigarette lighter' splitter with a couple of USB ports, and then add a couple of 12v to USB plug in adapters. Here are some examples:

Just make sure you know the amperage ratings of everything you are using so you don't exceed the limits of the adapters.

Take a closer look at the specs 12V 40A input requirement. It'll blow the fuse in the 12V plug in a matter of milliseconds.
The 12V plug can only provide about 100 watts, ain't going to get milk from a turnip.

Look at the other direct 12V chargers for best capabilities.

But the most important thing is that you really shouldn't need to be charging anything while travelling, that's what hotels and nights are for. During the day, you are just trickling charging everything. For me, the Anker 5 port is way to small, I charge more items each night. But that plugs into the hotel during the night, not the car during the day.

We wil be driving around 18 hours straight so I guess some charging will be necessary during driving.

Also the jumper posts behind the nose cone are already fused at 50AMPS, so you could just hard wire it to this jump posts as well in the frunk. Also if you blow the fuse, its fuse F83 in the link below.

12 Volt DC Systems

  • Formula: 12 volt inverters require approximately one (1) amp of DC input for each 10 watts of AC output.
    Example: How many DC amps will a 12 volt inverter require to operate three 500 watt quartz lights, or a 1500 watt electric heater?
    Answer: 1) Total watts = 1500
    2) 1500 watts/10 (from formula) = 150 amps
This is the DC current the inverter will use to operate the 1500 watt load. We know that the DC inverter is capable of peak loads of 250 Amps, so a sustained load of 150 AMPS should not harm the DC to DC inverter, in fact it could handle 2500 watts, so an 3000 Watt inverter is probably the max that is viable slaving off the DC to DC convert. I did look at slaving off the HV terminals, but haven't figured out how to do that yet, as the would provide a whole house solution....

Note – if this 150 amps is drawn from the battery for one hour, 150 amp hours (AH) of battery power will be used. To support 150 amp hours of battery power, 300 amp hours of battery capacity is required, which means that the DC to DC inverter is the Tesla will kick on and cycle the 30 AMP capacity battery a lot, reducing the life, which is why when it goes, upgrade to a Lithium Ion Battery which has the equivalency to a 100 AMP Lead Acid Battery and can handle 3X more cycles than the OEM AGM Lead Acid Battery.

Also if you have an early 2014 or older the DC to DC inverter is located in the passenger side wheel well and very clearly marked for both HV and LV 12VDC + / -. I had thought about by passing the battery completely and direct connecting to the DC to DC inverter, but was worried about load spikes or causing some kind of electrical issues.... so the second best option is the charge posts and third is direct connect to the battery terminals (just make sure you have a fuse in line) and the least best option is to use the 12 volt power port in the cabin.... Also I ran wires down the conduit marked below so I could install a large inverter in the trunk....the conduit runs front to rear below the door seals... I just drilled into it the trunk to gain access for the positive terminal and then used the ground location in the trunk. in the picture below is the red terminal cover is covering the 12 VDC + location that you could also tap.. my understanding is the is a 250AMP threshold. source:

You can PM @fabricator he would know the specs, here is a CRAZY audio install he did here in DC, I think he moved to Delaware, so if you are near him, he could help you out with this as well.. never mind... Canada might be too far away...... in the video is where my inverter is located, also I used the same Lithium Ion battery shown in the video, verses AGM Lead Acid OEM battery. Also Tesla will update the charging profile from AGM to Lithium Ion. The Lithium battery is more durable and also provides higher Amperage the the 1950's Lead Acid technology that is provided in the OEM configuration, details here https://www.element3batteries.com/product-page/tesla-lithium-12v-battery
