He seems to be using the mirrors and not a backup cam when he backs up.
Probably just out of habit. I still use mirrors (rearview and side) when backing up in addition to the camera view. Camera view is usually distorted or fish-eyed, so can be deceiving at times.

As rear backup camera is US federal government standard (not sure of other country standards) starting next year, surely the 3 has a backup camera.
