Good point! Even a ten-year-old computer has dozens of temperature sensors, especially if there are multiple variable-speed fans in the case. Computer temperature sensors are typically IC chips that are soldered onto the motherboard. They're very inexpensive, but difficult to replace without replacing the entire board.
I'm sure the Roadster has a combination of stand-alone temperature sensors (for liquids and large mechanical components) and IC temperature sensors (for the PEM or other electronics).
I do not know any details. The explanation certainl is a little bis simplified so I would understand it, is thet the sensor in question is not available alone, but the whole unit had to be replaced. No problem as long as we a guarantee...
