Background/relevance: OpenVehicles.com, a project, in part founded by Mark Webb-Johnson, Sonny Chen and team, have created a community sourced hardware and software solution to offer advanced smartphone connectivity for cars that lack the feature. Starting with the Tesla Roadster the module offers the owner access to important statistics including the much publicized state of battery charge and even issues a warning via SMS or Push message when the battery reaches a dangerous level. In addition, the unit allows remote control of the cars state of charge, remote location tracking and control over charging. This is delivered in a package no less sophisticated than any aftermarket auto-accessory yet was designed, debugged and build by the community.

    Release:

OpenVehicles.com selects Tesla Motors Club as technology partner for community developed vehicle and battery monitoring solution.

Working with OpenVehicles.com, Tesla Motors Club** is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the infrastructure to support the project. “It’s clearly a perfect fit for the club.” said Michael Thwaite, provider of the infrastructure for the clubs Electric Vehicle centric site. “We’ll be providing the communications channel between the Open Vehicle in-car hardware and the Mobile apps that the community has created."

Mark Webb-Johnson, of OpenVehicles.com***, said that "We have been looking for a trusted third party to host the production server part of this project, and Tesla Motors Club is a perfect fit. We are grateful for their support of the community of Tesla enthusiasts, and offer to help with this. With TMC handling the day-to-day hosting and running of the server, the developers can concentrate on the App and Vehicle Module parts of the system - with confidence that the production server environment is stable.

** Tesla Motors Club is an open forum for electric vehicle advocates with a center around the Tesla Motors range of electric vehicles. Founded in 2006 by Daniel Sachs, the club enjoys more than 20,000 visitors a month from all around the globe.

*** openvehicles.com is a community of enthusiasts who want an interface to be able to talk to our cars remotely, and have fun doing it. Using an in-car hardware module, communicating over the GSM cellular network, the system allows remote monitoring and control of vehicles via both smartphone Apps and SMS messaging. The project is open source and can be found at Open Vehicle Systems.

Thanks MPT, and all the others behind the Tesla Motors Club.

TMC hosting the production server part of the project is really a perfect fit. The server is online and live already, and we'll be moving over all the existing developers, and new users to this server over the coming days.

    Regards, Mark.
