Pre-facelift 85D => 100D upgrade

Hi all, as I bought about a year ago my first Tesla - S85D I'm much enjoying it since then, nevertheless the nerfed 85kWh pack offering max real usable capacity of only approx 60kWh incl slower SuC speeds was making me kind of upset. I was quite long time searching for an older P100D with free SuC for a reasonable price to upgrade to, but didn't find any.. So I ended up on thinking, whether upgrade is possible and as I found threads here referring to the possibility I started to find some shop with 100kWh pack on stock willing to perform such swap.
And I have found one, willing to upgrade it for 12500Eur incl VAT so I decided to go for it (WK057 offered here such swap in discount price for 18k USD as I remember). The pack is advertised to be only 43kkm (27kmiles), so quite new. Hopefully it was treated well and is in a good condition - will check it using SMT. I'm about to visit them during next week as they will be ready for to perform the swap (they're preparing some needed SW package).
What do you think about such offer? Is there anything special I should take a care of? Thanks!

Just report back with your findings and experience :)

There is one thing that could be an issue in Europe, but it may not be a real life issue. Your car does not have a CoC certificate for a 100 kWh battery, which is heavier than your old 85 kWh battery, so your car will no longer have a valid type approval. This would mean that your insurance company could deny/void any claims and your car could be deemed not roadworthy at the next MOT. But these scenarios are somewhat theoretical as the MOT man would not know what to look for and the insurance company would not even think of checking.

Yes, I know about it, but thanks for the point anyway ;)
I can accept some risk as I have also rebuilt small Peugeot 106 electric from NiCad to Li-Ion salvaged from BMW i3 ;)
As for the Tesla taking into account also what you nentioned I don't see it as a big risk, nevertheless I'm considering about sticker change anyway .)
For sure I'll inform about news in this topic ;)

Ok guys, so the upgrade is done and I must say the car is just amazing with this battery. The nominal cap is 92kWh, it has 7MWh on SC and 12MWh on AC charged, so approx 100kkm driven. On max charge it shows 500km. Regarding tge SuC speed, I maxed on 135kW, but generaly it stays over 110kW until 40-50%. We have found out a problem with the front louvers which might be the root cause. But otherwise even that speed is MUCH faster then the 85kWh one. I'm really happy about the purchase and much enjoy the range ;)

No, it was needed to upload new "100D" firmware to make the car able to communicate with the battery (BMS), so the car now thinks as it is 100D. You can also see "100D" on combi and in app (but with the nosecone picture, which kind of surprised me). In fact, it was the biggest challenge which took several hours to the specialist. The physical swap itself was very fast.
And the car is still online, now as a 100D as I mentioned, but in the features you can still see it was 85D.

thanks, distance is not a problem for me if I can keep using my model S for years longer!
Yep, totally understood :)
In fact, during the first year of my new MS usage, I was very happy with the car except the battery charging speed. And also capacity might be higher as it was capped. So I was sadly thinking of upgrade to MS with 100kWh pack and free SuC (which basically is only P100D ordered before 15 Jan 2017 so far as I understood, 100D's were announced later)... knowing I'll miss the dual charger and maybe also some of the features I have now ..IF I'll be lucky to find anything for a reasonable price - approx 50-55kEur. I don't need AP2.0 or newer...just happy enough with AP1.
Therefore I'm very happy I could stay with this car, just little bit afraid if it's not gonna be sometime a problem when Tesla recognizes this upgrade.. But probably shouldn't as @wk057 and others did such upgrades in the past..

Another shop having many parts for Tesla which also used to have 100kWh packs on sale was Запчасти автомобилей Тесла купить в Киеве и Украине с доставкой по всему миру– Stock Tesla. But as they're from Kiev, I'm really not sure, whether they are still selling or not.

And another thing came on to my mind, as you don't probably have AWD version of the car. It is quite easy to mount such battery to a dual motor vehicle with air suspension as there is a firmware for it. But not for RWD - @wk057 can do it, but with some caveats. So before such upgrade try to consult it with the specific shop, if they're able to perform such swap. Also the spring suspension on 60D would be set to much lower weight, so would need some re-adjustment.

Sounds indeed very interesting to do and I would love to have that as an option instead of being reliant on Tesla.

One bump on the road would be if it would be possible (weight the frame could carry) and permissible (regulations) to upgrade the battery in The Netherlands.

The weight of the battery (60>75>85>90>100) must be different, unless it is software limited. This would result in a difference in overall car weight from the registration documents. How that could be solved is a totally different matter.

Tried getting a tow hook assembly build in into my ModelX (yeah one of the few without T-T), which nobody could do. Aftermarket nobody offered it, Tesla NL did not offer it although apparently they do install it at Tesla SC in other countries, however the RDW did not know if they would be able to modify the registration papers.

Given the 22k price on the website this implies that you traded up your pack and got 10k for your 85 pack? Sounds like a good deal 🙂

Those 22k€ was without VAT.. So including also the fact they didn't count the labor (another approx 700€), the resale value was even better ;) And so far the pack seems to be in great shape given it has 22MWh charged total... So I'm still very hapy ;)

Thanks for sharing. Good to know we have options in Europe. I really like what @wk057 is doing but since he does not want to conduct his business elsewhere I’m rooting for alternatives.

I'd love to be able to open additional locations. Unfortunately it doesn't make any sense, and no one would pay the prices required to keep that afloat.

EU and US west coast are just insane. I honestly have no clue how anyone operates a business in either location in a sustainable way. We'd have to quadruple prices in order to do so... and at that rate, what's the point? Just buy a new car.

Do you have the Tessie app? How do you know the battery nominal cap is 92 kwh? I was curious about degradation in your newly installed pack. The reason for my curiosity is Tessie is telling me my pack has zero degradation and has 81.9kwh cap. It almost seemed too good to be true to have zero degradation in a car nearly 7 years old. Low miles of 6k could have something to do with it though. 90kwh pack is what I have manufactured in 12/2015

A Tesla is more expensive here compared to the US so that’s why it would make sense IMO

I use SMT tool. Even I can't imagine how did it happen to have such low mileage on a 7yrs old vehicle, the degradation seems to be not correctly calculated. It would probably require some full cycle to see the real usable capacity. Depends for sure on BMS proper calibration data.

Is being able to put the vehicle in factory mode a prerequisite for the car to recognize the new battery?
