Looking at it from the other side of the coin, did those who ordered PUP at the higher option price receive a discount when it became standard at the lower price?

That was done depending on the OA/place...some got the 2K refund while many didn't, and some also could get the PUP upgrade while others didn't. My OA tried but was denied by "upper management".

Having just driven a loaner without PUP I'm sure glad I ordered my car with it now! I didn't realise how much I would miss the premium audio (standard audio is weak in comparison whatever anyone says), heated wheel and HEPA filter (my car smells much better inside after the same 12K miles).

For those wanting upgrades to these items there must be loads of quality aftermarket audio upgrades and you can upgrade the filter (although not the software). Heated wheel probably not, but who else offers such retro-fit items unless ripping you off for them? Porsche offer certain retro-fit upgrades, but only if they don't involve ripping the car apart and they are usually more expensive than the original factory fit option (as you would expect).

Sorry, just not getting this retro PUP fitting idea, especially for less money than it would have originally cost to factory fit! We all had the chance to choose PUP when we bought our cars and now it's standard fitment at a reduced price.

With the release of Tesla parts to public, more info is now available. It is possible to add heated seats, but maybe not heated steering? Audio and biodefense are probably pretty doable. No idea still about self-presenting door, no info out there about it.

I had a chat with my local SC and they think at some point in the future it maybe possible that Tesla could offer upgrades to be retrofitted, but don't expect anytime soon though! Except the heated steering, everything else is apparently relatively easy to retrofit.

This sound like good news as I am planning to keep my X for many years. I hope they were not just giving you the answer you wanted to hear and anytime soon is not ever. I do not really care about the heated stuff but more interested in the front doors and better audio. I am happy to hear that Tesla is to the opinion that those are relatively easy to retrofit and would not void any warranty. We need more people to talk to local SC.

Late to this thread, but it's amazing for me. Love everything about it and do not regret paying $5k for it. Not sure if I'm an outlier, but I use everything about it. Heated steering wheel is so nice :)
I am with you and you are not an outlier. I was lucky enough to get the ventilated seats and love them. Some ppl were just flat out wrong about them not working. If you live in the south, it is a great benefit. I use my auto present on a daily basis. Several times a day, I might have my hands full approaching the car. I always smile when the door opens for me. V9 having the heated seats sticky at the bottom of screen is a great feature. Having to fumble with the old menu to turn individual seats off was a pain.

I think there may be an additional proximity sensor involved, but not sure.

Nope, this is confirmed to be software. All cars actually had this, but Tesla put out a software update to disable this in cars without PUP. The self presenting doors were initially part of the PUP upgrade, and key fob based open door command was all cars.

The hardware like sensors are already in your car - same sensors used when using the buttons on your centre screen.

If proximity as in your proximity to the car - these same sensors are used for activating summon mode.

I forgot to ask the SC about this specific question. This is what I thought too, but my OA said it was hardware, which I don't believe given that Tesla had this feature on the fob before.

If anyone happens to be at the SC and have a chance to talk to their techs, please do ask about the self-presenting door i.e. hardware or software? Please report back here. Thanks.:)

Already did this first week of delivery lol, I was told it was software because mine worked before and it stopped working, and initially the SC was shocked, and then said they found out Tesla software locked it.

Apparently people were buying it for the key fob feature and no one actually liked he self presenting feature.

Thanks for sharing. It's safe to assume then that self-presenting door option will be easy to do for Tesla since it is just software.

Surprising to see that people who don't care for PUP lead the poll at the moment!

What result did you expect, given that you missed out the most glaringly obvious option in your poll? i.e. those who chose PUP and are happy with it. Those who chose not to buy PUP are by definition quite likely not to care for it. The minority who regretted buying PUP suggests most people who do get it are reasonably happy with it, despite the cost. But because you missed out that option, you don't know how many people are in that group compared to those who don't care for it. It's also notable that not many people in your poll had any regrets in not buying PUP, yet quite a few people think it should be a retro-upgrade option. That doesn't really make any sense unless the people who do want the retro-upgrade option didn't bother to vote for regretting not buying it in the first place.

Basically your poll is quite flawed and IMHO not of very much value. It does show that there is some demand for retro-fitting among owners who don't have PUP and it shows that quite a few people really don't care about PUP (unless they bought it, lol).

Yup, I know that but couldn't add the option to the poll after posting it!

I believe it may be a fairly small number of cars that got affected by the PUP decision. Tesla was previously selling options separately and in mid 2017, decided to bundle all options into PUP with a very high price tag (~8,000 CDN$ or ~4,600 pounds). At the time, even Tesla sales specialists were down playing PUP due to value proposition related to price. With Tesla now including PUP as standard, only the cars produce during this ~12-month period are heavily affected. You may have few that did not previously purchase one of the options but for us it was the all or nothing. We are not asking for charity but would like Tesla to close this gap they created between the separate options to the all-included. This forum appears to be our only voice as Tesla upper management obviously don’t care.

I think if Tesla would allow the PUP option then it would have to be probably done by either their own or Tesla-approved body shops because SC's will simply not be able to handle these given that they are already overwhelmed. If anyone who wants the PUP or at least certain features like heated steering or music system, and you have a scheduled visit to the SC, it might be worth asking them if they can let their approved body shop install the upgrades. If there are enough people asking them about this & the SC informs upper management, they may consider it at some point to provide this option to the old timers; it's a long shot, but you never know with Elon!
