Production delays in Black Multi-Pattern Seats

I must have become a squeaky enough wheel over the last 5+ months to my Delivery Specialist about the lack of information about my MX production and delivery status that I had a Delivery Experience Manager reach out to me and give me a phone call a few minutes ago. He had inquired with production about the status of my vehicle and why it had been delayed for so long and had some news to report.

It turns out that Tesla was unhappy about the quality of the Black Multi-Pattern seats (durability perhaps?), and decided to have them made again (maybe even change suppliers). They are expecting the new seats to come in 10-14 days, after which they will need to be installed, and then the car will need to go through the full QC / inspection / validation process to make sure everything is right. So my guess would be it will be another month or more before the car will be ready for delivery in Fremont. The DEM said that he would update me when the seats arrive as to how long the remaining processes would take as they are in flux right now.

Hopefully the new seat material is great otherwise I will have wished I opted for leather and had the car months sooner. I'm not crazy about leather seats, but I'm sure I could have gotten used to them :)

That is surprising as the very few people that took delivery of the Multi-Pattern seats loved it and didn't find any issues. I am still waiting a month since my promised delivery date for my leather seats.

Hmmm, I am kind of surprised they were not happy with the quality. the material looks to be identical to the BMP seats on the Model S which people seem very happy with long term. I would hope they would stick with at least the same material since it is a known quantity on the S.

I got the same call and the same news.
I also asked if switching to leather at this point is possible and whether that would get me the car faster - he wasn't sure and said he would escalate to find out.

I have the same question. I had asked back in February if switching to leather and the PUP would speed things up and they weren't sure. Obviously a lot of unexpected things have happened since then, but it seems likely it would have been the right call.

Yeah - that's what I figured.

I have a few road trips planned in mid June and early July that I wanted the car for - it would be a disaster to not get it by then and I would prefer to fly rather than drive an ICE for them.

I've missed several myself already and have another on May 19th. I'm actually driving a Tesla provided ICE rental car right now, but it seems pretty weird after driving a Nissan Leaf since 2011.

Yes - I was try to reconcile the fact the some people have taken delivery of BMP seats already. Perhaps they will swap those out down to road a bit depending on customer necessity.

I had the same issue. Had few trips planned and my X got delayed (getting my car this Friday). My DS was nice enough to give me a loaner MS for my trip (3 days) which turned out even better as I could test autopilot, supercharging before I get my car. I had another trip which I could cancel, otherwise I felt they would have given me the loaner for another week. So let your DS know about your trips.

Reading this thread, now I am a little worried that my future X (26xx) is already produced and has been waiting for the new seats. It may mean that the car passed through the production line during its problematic phase and has been sitting somewhere waiting and accumulating rust. A disconcerting thought wrought by a confused mind.

It may be the first batch of seats which were manufactured at low volume were fine, but when the supplier tried to step up production, the seat quality dropped. A few people got multi-pattern seats from the first batch, but production of the rest has been hung up because the supplier proved unable to scale up production and maintain quality.
