Better Place may have succeeded (and now NIO) if modular battery packs were used.
Small one for small, mostly commuting cars. A larger or really big one for oversized SUVs or for a longer trip.

That still doesn't solve the inherent problem with swapping, needing to have copies of the most expensive part of an EV stored at various locations at all times for peak use. Plus the expense of the swapping machinery. Both make the ultimate cost of EV's more than necessary. It also adds weight and complexity to a vehicle, note that Tesla has gone in the opposite direction with a structural pack. It was never a good idea and never will be.
