Today, I found out we have a 10-30 outlet already that is not being used.

Why did you buy a 6-15 adapter? It won't plug into a 10-30 outlet.
That is the first thing I noticed in the original post. Why did it take until comment #21 to notice that it's the wrong plug adapter?

And I don't think I saw it explained very clearly yet about the P and R terminology.
At your house, the things in the wall are called "receptacles", so that's why you see 10-30R. The cord from a lamp or microwave or dryer has the metal pins on it and is called the "plug", so that is why you see 10-30P. It's to tell whether you are buying a plug piece or a receptacle piece.
