PSA: CAV Toll Tag for SR-237

Just a heads up: solo drivers need a special "CAV toll tag" to receive the discounted rate on the new SR-237 express lanes. It is not required for the other express lanes in the Bay Area.

Yeah. But honestly, given the prevalence of EVs (and in particular Teslas) in the Bay Area, it was just a matter of time. I'm sure the other express lanes will follow sooner or later. Oh well, at least we get 50% off and not just 15 like the folks in the LA area ...

Please note that the "Fastrak CAV Toll Tag" is different than the "Fastrak Flex Toll Tag". The new Fastrak CAV device is ONLY needed for SR-237 at this time and is only available to vehicle owners with a CAV certificate issued with Red or Puple CAV decals.

You could always do what the carpool lane was intended for: carpool. I read somewhere that if just 5% of drivers did that, it would solve most of the congestion issues in the Bay Area.

Besides, on Friday in the thick of the evening rush hour the toll for the SR-237 eastbound express lane was $0.50 (i.e. $0.25 if you have the new tag). That will not exactly break the bank.

BTW, shipping for the tags is really fast. I have already received my new tag yesterday one day after requesting it.

I hope the new 101 corridor uses one of the current toll tags and not a third for the Bay Area.

You can use the regular transponder and pay full price, or use the CAV transponder and pay half price. They both work.

Also, AFAIK, there's no benefit to having more than one tag in a vehicle. The CAV tag can do the job of all the others.

Mine hasn't beeped yet either. According to the pamphlet that came with the tag it may or may not beep in express lanes depending on the location. I haven't driven through a bridge toll plaza yet with the CAV tag.

Well I carpooled today so we will see if I get charged or not.

What if someone "accidentally" leaves the switch on the CAV tag at 2 people so they don't get charged? How will they enforce that?

There is a sign that flashes a number on 880 south. Presumably, that's the number picked up from your transponder. A cop can then match that number to each passing car.
