PSA: If you installed charging station in 2017, you're eligible now for 30% tax credit

Turns out if you are already getting a refund you get $0 back for the car charger. Apparently that’s in the fine print. Unlike with the EV tax credit where you just need enough taxable income and taxes paid to get the refund.

Unless TurboTax has entered the form incorrectly, this is wrong. I just entered in my info for the install and my return went up $700.

FWIW, the 8911 form says it needs to have been placed in service during the tax year.

Seems to me if it became functional, it was "in service."

I need to look into it again but the fine print said that it was only to reduce tax not add to refund.

Could be related to AMT? The instructions form on how to fill it out for 2017 seem to show you transfer it over like any other credit.

FYI Form is now live in Turbo tax .. I did a search for 8936 in the software to get me to where I needed to input the numbers.

Here's what's in the latest TurboTax for Windows CD/Download personal (individual) software update (R19) released Thursday, March 1:

• Forms 8910 (Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit) and 8936 (Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit) have been finalized

I got AMT'd out of this credit. Bummer.

The trick may be don't do it the same year as the car credit. But now they tell us...
