Purposely Delayed Tesla Model 3 Refund

Is Tesla fraudulently withholding people's deposits?

I am having a frustrating experience recouping my Tesla Model 3 refund (I submitted my refund request back at the beginning of July). In the past 3 weeks, I have called 3 times, including being escalated to a supervisor. Here is the chronology of our correspondence so far.

First call: The representative told me that on their end it was showing the money had been deposited to my bank 3 days after I requested the refund. I immediately logged in to my bank while I still had the representative on the phone and confirmed that was not the case. He then told me he would open a ticket for someone to "look into it" and get back to me in 5-8 business days.

Second call (10 days later): I asked what the resolution had been and got the same story that on their end it was showing it was refunded, but they are still looking into it. I then insisted that this was unacceptable, and I needed my $1,000 back, and the representative promised to look into it herself and then call me back. She did call me back and left a message saying a check for my refund was in the mail for me and would arrive in 15-30 business days, because they "just can't be sure with the postal service."

Third call (5 days later): I called to check on the status of my refund, and the representative mentioned they were still looking into it. The representative had no record of a planned refund via check, with confirmed by suspicion when I got that call back at the end of the second call. I asked to talk to a supervisor. I asked the supervisor whether it was still showing on their end that the amount had been refunded to my bank. The supervisor said, "yes." I then asked the supervisor how it was then that last time I called I was told that a check had been issued with a refund (clearly they're not going to issue a refund check if they truly think they paid me). I explained to the supervisor that this all seemed like a very intentional ploy to delay paying (or not pay) me. He said he would personally look into it and would hopefully call me within the next hour but definitely by the end of the day. No call back.

Tesla customer service e-mail thread: Meanwhile I had a thread going with Tesla customer service. Here is the last response I got after all of the above calls:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Tesla Support. You have recently reached out to us for an update on a requested cancellation for your Tesla car order. Please confirm that you had requested the cancellation but have not yet received the promised refund for the below order, along with providing your name and mailing address:

Order Number:

Name and Address (If necessary, a check will be mailed to this address within 30-60 business days):

Best,

Desiree | Order Support Specialist

At this point I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is an intentional fraudulent scheme to delay paying out my refund for as long as possible (or not pay at all).

Has anyone had a similar experience?

LMAO.

Tesla burns $9,000 per minute. Your $1,000 doesn’t even fund one pee break for 200 employees.

You will get your money. They are just going through the busiest two days of their Tesla lives in the history of the company.

As far as a similar experience, no I didn’t get refunds either. It just went to the purchase price of the car. :(

I had them take a long time to refund my 1K. They said it was refunded to my credit card. The payment never posted. I called a couple times. Last time I called I got the same email as you to fill out. Later that day a check showed up in the mail.

Seems like they are mailing checks but theyre very slow. Even though theyre system says it has been refunded to the original payment account.

Very generous with other people's money, no? Yeah, how dare these peasants ask for their money back, don't they know how little that means to us Enlighted Ones?

They took just under 90 days with my previous refund, a few days short of automatic adjudication in my favor. They gave me the same "we tried to refund in 3 days" and "we're sending a check" lies. It's simple, they're broke and they're full of crap. I still bought their product, hoping that they will move past being broke and start fixing all this fustercluck. We'll probably know n a few months.

Tesla is incompetent, not morally deficient.

They are not trying to steal from anyone.

They can’t even take money from people with how screwy their finance division is.

Just cancelled my reservation on Saturday and the deposit showed up at my CU yesterday. Went with the debit card option. I was kind of shocked they processed it over the weekend. It must be automated or something if using a debit card.

If you believed OP's spin on your experience he would say that Tesla "accidentally" refunded your reservation.

Whoever processed your refund is getting sent to the woodshed today.

Lol, that's the longest estimate for a check being sent via USPS. Laughable. I agree with the post #6 who said that Tesla is not morally deficient. They're just utterly incompetent.

Bank to bank is different, that can take longer. Tesla rep told OP that the check was sent directly to him. Coast to coast USPS rarely,if ever, exceeds a week, that's 6 business days (Monday-Saturday). 15-30 business days is just wrong.
Sure. As for the OP's "purposefully delayed", though, I'd caution him to never assume skullduggery when simple incompetence can also explain the evidence.

I got a Solar Roof deposit refund... I was expecting it to go back to a credit card, but they simply mailed a check (which was good, because my original credit card I'd made the deposit with was about to be cancelled on me). I think they mail checks for a lot of situations.

On the other hand, my Model 3 refund did go back to the original credit card, and quite quickly.

As usual, the people on the phone did not really know what was going on. Nobody seems to know whether the money will go back to the original payment method or be mailed in a check. (Maybe the system makes one try at the original payment method and then sends a check? Maybe it uses the original payment method if it's less than a year old and sends a check otherwise? Who knows? The Tesla representatives on the phone certainly don't know.)

I don't think it's intentional, I think it's just (gross) incompetence. To the OP: write back to Desiree; that's your best chance.

It's extremely hit or miss dealing with Tesla... They made me a job offer back in 2014 and the two people that came out were fresh out of school with zero knowledge about what was even being offered. Needless to say I didn't take it.

The ordering and delivery of my Model 3 was flawless. Big plus there.

Today I just went to credit card company and disputed the charge over an EAP pricing mishap. So who knows, I'm still a supporter and hope they figure it out soon.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.

I had a blast helping out my SC. They fed us lunch and I got to talk to people about Tesla (both new customers and club members) all morning. Plus I'm a stockholder. ;)
