Q2 2022 UK Model Y - factory fitted front bumper PPF?

Following on from the scattered chatter on the delivery thread, I thought it’d be worthwhile to break out the question: did the Q2 2022 Model Ys get delivered with factory fitted PPF on the bumper.

My current theory is that it’s just on the white ones for now.

I think this isn't PPF - I think its the moulding marks.

I have exactly the same on my Q1 MSM model Y.

I cant imagine why any manufacturer would put this over their paintwork.

It’s hard to photograph but it really looks like a clear layer on top. I suppose that could be the clear coat.

It is very odd - I picked at the corner of mine to no avail.. It is a strange moulding mark and I cant see why it would be designed that way.. confused!

Could it be a special layer of clear coat? I’m not sure why it would be applied that way but my detailer did not believe it is a PPF like material but something embedded to the bumper.

My Q1 car doesn't have it and it's white.

I'm moving to the "not PPF" camp. Compared to the PPF near the rear wheel arch this is very suble and nobody seems to have air bubbles or other issues at the front. The edge on the rear wheel PPF also gets dirty easily whereas the front doesn't seem to. So comparing the front and back they are vastly different standards of work if they're both PPF and I don't think Tesla could pull that off hence I think it's something else..

Simple way to test this is to get a wire brush and rub it forcefully across the front bumper. Then get a hairdryer and heat up the scratched area.

If the scratches disappear then congratulations, your bumper came with PPF installed.

I posted the question on Reddit and the consensus was… not PPF but just the mould as suggested.

I’ll keep the wire brush in the cupboard
