Question on 2017 S MCU and dashboard

Have an appointment with the Service Center next week, and I am hoping you folks can give me a heads up on what I should expect. For several weeks now both the dashboard and the big screen (MCU?) ---mostly the latter----have been acting up. I have re-booted several times. The mishaps happen every day when I 1st start the car. Typically, the big screen will not come on. Therefore, I don't have the camera; am unable to close the garage door as the icon and 'home' words don't show up; may or may not have the A/C; and no music. Maybe about 1/2 the time the scrolls on the steering wheel for the music volume and A/C will not work----and once a week the dashboard will be blank as well. And, a few times a week the auto seat positioning will not work.

Then any where from 3 to around 8 minutes later as I am driving everything will come back on. One day, after everything came on, two minutes later while in traffic everything went off again (even the directional stopped working).

The car is a 2017 S with about 36,000 miles. We bought it new and never had the MCU upgraded or anything (it was serviced once where they did a 'recovery' or something when I had it in for an 'annual service check-up' ----had 4 of these done). Any idea what we are looking at for a fix and how much it will cost? Thanks.

If you have the first generation MCU, there is a memory chip in it that degrades and causes these types of symptoms. Tesla issued a recall for it and will replace that chip.

The MCU upgrade also includes two new screens to replace the dashboard screen and the control panel screen. You should have them also replace the SD memory card for the Navigation, as it surely has passed its useful life. Normally, they use the old SD card from the old MCU. This is a very inexpensive part.

As others have mentioned, it's probably the eMMC card. Should have gotten a recall notice. I'm taking my 2016 S75 in for MCU2 upgrade at the end of the month and was quoted $1645.

Great information. Thank you very much---it is greatly appreciated. We found it extremely helpful. A few years back I did have issues with the MCU, but I looked at the invoice and it talked about doing 'recovery' type work. There was no mention of replacing the card. I am wondering if they did the 'recovery' work because they didn't have enough replacement cards to handle the volume of all the recall work at that time.

Again, thank you for help and insight into this. You educated us and now we will feel comfortable when talking to the Service Center staff.
