Radar detector mirror tap

Recently I wanted to hardwire my radar detector to the rearview mirror in my 2017 Tesla Model S . But I could not find any decent pictures or description on how to DIY(Most descriptions were for dashcam which require constant power unlike radar detector). I have no experience with car electronics but was able to do it myself. Decided to post some pics so others can benefit.

Prash, I have a 2015 P85D and would like to try your method with a Uniden R3. I've tried getting the backing off the rear view mirror to access the mirror power, but I can only seem to loosen it. Any hints on how to get it completely off (without breaking it)? Also, has this method help up for you? Thanks.

Press on both ends(like squeezing) and pull it out. Good luck.

@prash , Thanks for your original post. The pictures were immensely helpful, managed to mirrortap from RVM without any trouble.

I have a RVM mounted BlackVue 900S which does not have vented slots like the OEM so I had to drill a hole to pass the RJ-11 cord through to my Uniden R7.

Now all I'm waiting is for Blendmount to fabricate one for Tesla that fits the R7 so I can get rid of the current suction mount

cool.I just use the ebay mount recommended at post 8 of this thread. I used extra glue on the tape and so far good.

You should check out my blackvue wiring video on youtube
Those wires you have to the camera can be tucked away and you wont even see them

Also, an idea you may like.
I used a visor clip and mounted my radar detector on the passenger vanity mirror. I have the uniden r3. Used an escort pasport visor clip and cut it to fit in the slot of the uniden r3. Works great. Reason I like this idea is because the radar detector is out of the sun. Its still easy to mute it if needed. Its also hidden out of the way

HERE is the power solution.
Dashcam Power Cable for Tesla Model S (assembled) | eBay

This is an inline extension cable that attaches to the "spare" power connector in the headliner.
I say spare, as it is spare as shipped from the factory, but used if you have the optional "Enhanced Anti Theft" device.
(Model S Enhanced Anti-theft)

So, with this power connector, you can simply attach the power cable wires from your existing device; cut the plug off, and expose the 2 internal cables (do not strip them) and then the power adapter will clamp down on the power cable and make everything work.

I had made my own power cables previously by getting a "fan connector" cable, that attaches to the "spare" plug in the Tesla, however once I added the AntiTheft device, that cable was used, and I needed a better solution. The Power cable is great as it has the correct Tesla power plugs on it, and makes everything easy.

Hi, wanted to check if the connection is still holding up. Also, how did you determine the ground to connect to? I have a 2017 75D as well and wanted to go the mirror tap route.

Just for the record, in a new 2020 Model S, I spent some time looking and could not find true switched power at the rear view mirror. Plenty of constant power. There is also power up there for the camera, which *is* switched off when the car is off, as long as sentry mode is not enabled. However, I leave sentry mode on always except at home in my garage, so that's the only time the detector is powered off by the car. Every other case, the detector (a Max 360c) turns itself off after 2 hours of being idle, which is less than ideal because I then have to remember to turn it on, preferably before driving past a speed trap o_O

I plan on picking up a Radenso Theia once those come out, which will draw too much power to use a mirror tap so I'll have to run a hardwire up the A pillar anyway. I suppose I should get off my a$$ and just run the wire already so I don't keep finding my detector off after I've been driving for 20 minutes...

Also for the record, there is no rf blocking film on my windshield. My radar detector and GPS gadgets all work exactly the way they're supposed to anywhere on the windshield, and I've witnessed these things not working on an older Model S from about 2015.
