Referral Program [tesla did not properly credit referral miles]

The referral program feels like a total sham to me. We had our test drive cancelled TWICE so my friend drove his car from Boston down to Cape Cod (1.5 hrs) so we could drive it and answered all of our questions. He sent us his link which we used. After pick up of our new car, Tesla said they are not registering that we used the code. Multiple canned responses, but no one cares at all about resolving this. I just want my friend rewarded, which is the whole intent of the program I assume. There was nothing in the entire process that clued us in beforehand if the referral link worked. I am actually going to reach out to the Attorney General in our state because I don’t know what else to do. It feels fraudulent to me.

I get that its the principle of the matter, but googling "average electricity rates in boston ma comes up with 14.X cents. At 15 cents a kWh, 1000 referral miles is worth like $150 and thats if someone uses them all.

TL ; DR, i get that its frustrating, but if its because of "the value" there isnt that much there.

Thank you jjrandorin. It does put it in perspective, but I think it is the principle of their complete lack of caring about it. For example, I can tell their replies are canned because the account is under my husband’s name, but I have been writing the emails and every reply starts with “Dear [husband’s name] and ends with “hope you will use the referral program for a friend”.

Oh I totally get "the principle of the matter". I have stopped doing business with some companies over less than $150 due to how they treated me. I just wanted to provide some context, because sometimes people get wrapped up in (for example) moving up (or back) a purchasing decision because of some extra supercharging miles, as if its some huge benefit.

For me personally, even "free supercharging for life" would be a burden, not a bonus, because I would feel compelled to drive to the supercharger thats 2 miles from my house to charge, instead of charging at home. That would make me run the car down lower, to get the supercharging speed to be faster.

Even though sitting in a tesla, watching netflix while waiting in a climate controlled (air conditioned or heated) environment is pretty comfortable, its not as comfortable as my house / my couch.

For me, supercharging miles only really have value when driving someplace that is out of my area, and I havent done that very much since 2019.

I called the service center my car was at and pressed button for sales. The person I talked to added my code just fine for me after. I had not actually picked up the car yet. But I already had a vin and pickup date and such. Did you call your SC sales directly?

Tesla has a very long history of either adding it (the referral code) or not, or saying they added it but then the referral perk not showing up, etc etc.

This has been going on for more than 2 years (since before I joined this website), with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes people get told "sure we will add it" and it goes fine, sometimes people get told "sure we will add it" and dont get the referral bonus, then contact tesla only to be told "sorry we cant help you, whoever told you that was wrong". Sometimes people get it added and it works.

The one constant we have seen is, adding the referral code after the fact can be a huge crapshoot in what actually happens. In order for a person to guarantee they get the referral bonus, one must order through the link of the person referring. If that isnt done, its a crapshoot as to what happens.

It sounds like you are one of the few who got someone who actually added it successfully after the fact ( if you have actually taken delivery and verified receipt of the referral miles, that is).

Yeah it kinda sucks it depends who answered the phone. My miles did get added and my $3 supercharge was free on the way home lol. But again I didn't take delivery yet at the time and he specifically asked me if I had.

I actually got this email afterwards too, I forgot.

Hello Thomas,

Thank you for contacting the Tesla Referral Program. I apologize for the delayed response, and any inconvenience this may have caused. I have been able to review your order and confirm the order was placed through a referral link in the correct time frame to receive 1000 miles. You will be able to see these miles in your loot box, located in your Tesla app. Please allow 10-14 business days from delivery to receive these referral miles.

Thank you for being part of the Tesla family and thank you for helping to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Best,
Referral Program Specialist

I gave my referral code to my BIL when he reserved his M3P and gave it to his SA. During delivery, he reminded his SA and gave it to him again. He got his 1000 miles. I didn't.
He went to see his SA again and asked. He was told that they gave the 1000 miles to someone else. How!?
He asked for a super and was told that they couldn't do anything about it.
I'm raising the BS flag. There's some scam going on at the Brea Mall Tesla location.
Who can I elevate this issue to?

I know this is a month-old post, but …. I’d have to say I’ve derived over $1000 of value so far from the free supercharging perk, and we just bought our Model X end of June ‘20. It’s 100% all about the road trip.

I don’t even think about it - as in, not at all, when I’m anywhere near home. It’s only for road trips. We’ve done, to date, a little over 10,000 miles road tripping. It was one of the only getaways I felt safe doing thru the crisis.

The way I see it — my X costs me between $40-$50 in electricity per month. That’s less than an hour of my time at work. Not worth wasting my time traipsing back and forth to a Supercharger to save that. Better for me to earn a living. :) But on the road? Oh yeah, totally a nice to have. Especially since we now have a travel trailer to pull…. That makes the X suck down juice like a Kennedy at an open bar!
