Vendor Refresh Model S LR/Plaid : Winter Tire Option

I thought of the 275 in the rear (until 295 is available in A/S) but the stretch looks bad. But primarily the 21's have very low sidewalls and the rim needs the protection that a stretched tire will not provide.

I pick up my 20x10 with 285/35r20 (all four) on Friday or Saturday. Will post pics.
Will the 285 on the front not be very wide? No worry about rubbing or anything?

Good question. I think it will be fine. It is an additional 0.4" wide on inside and outside. The announced upcoming 20" OEM wheel is same size and offset as what I am getting. So I am going with that size. Assuming Tesla does not change the hub or any mating parts for this 20" wheel when it comes, I should be fine. I will keep an eye on it and change it out for a 265/40r20 if it does not work out.

I bet Jamie @SignatureSales or @SignatureWheel can confirm that it is a good fit. But in his post #27 he stated that it would be fine.

Here's to hoping this is not an expensive experiment...

Duplicate post, but I finally had my service appointment. I brought the OEM 19s and they put all seasons on the car. Apparently they don’t have “winter” tires for the refresh. But all seasons should be fine for me in Philadelphia. The pics are the front and rear. The Tesla service center said these were the all seasons they had available.

Thanks! We only sell wheels, but can also offer tire and TPMS but will be ship seprealty.

It won't be that aggressvie. Model Y Performance wheel are 21x10.5 wiht 275/35/21. You can expect the same sidewall look like below.

Refresh Model S now come with staggered setup. 19x9.5 & 19x10.5 or 21x9.5 & 21x10.5. 245/45/19 will not fit the rear.

If you prefer to run square all around and to have the ability to rotate the tire, you will need a new wheel setup. For the LR Refresh Model S, I recommened getting a set of 19x9 or 20x9.5 Square with 255/45/19 or 265/40/19 all aorund for the LR Refresh Model S.
Thanks so much for your help! This thread has been very helpful. I just got my Plaid on Thursday and should not have waited until now to try to get winter tires for it..

I'm trying to do the "winter wheel/package option" on Tirerack.com. Having them mounted and balanced is nice so I can do the swap on my own at home and the square setup is appealing to me. When I select 255/45/19 for my tire size it lets me pick the Sottozero 3s but then the only 2 wheel choices are 19x8.5. How big of a deal is it to have 19x8.5 versus 19x9 as you recommended?

At this point I'm also willing to buy separately the 19x9s wheels and tires you recommended and have a shop mount/balance them once and then I can be good going forward but I can't figure out how to do that on tirerack.

They also offered 255/45/19 front 285/40/19 rear Pilot Alpins but then said they had no matching wheel size. I can't even find anywhere selling the OEM 19x9.5 Cardenio wheel if I wanted to buy another set of those for my winter tires...Ugh. For the last resort, I could order these Pilot Apin tires and put them on my current wheels since I know that will work but that means having to go to a shop 2 times a year for the change. Thank you!!!

So what I plan on doing is buying an extra set of the stock 21" wheels and having them re-finished in another shade of silver or maybe gloss black this time. There are many companies around that will do that. I had a 2018 Model S before and I bought a set of the original Arachnid wheels and sent them to be finished in a liquid gunmetal silver. They looked amazing. The problem now is nobody is selling the new Arachnids for cheap yet. I figure by next winter there will be plenty of sets out there for less than $3,500.

I have a friend who works for Tire Rack and he gave me the perfect combo to use the exact same size tires for the Plaid. Basically, its totally fine to run two different brands of tires on the car as long as you match or come close to the amount of silica used in the tire. Winter tires have a higher level of silica to keep them flexible in cold weather. Also trying to match the tread pattern is optimal. He found 2 that are almost identical in silica content and tread pattern. Here is what I am going with.
Front:
265/35/21 Pirelli Winter Sottozero Sierie II
Rear:
295/30/21 Continental WinterContact TS860S

The Continentals will be back in stock soon. I luckily got some while they had them. Other stores have them in stock though.

Here are some pictures of my Old style Arachnid Wheels I had re-finished.

Ok. So here is what I went with,,,
Decided to go all season (Pilot A/S 4) instead of dedicated winter. Also went square 20". I will be tripping down warmer climates during the winter and want more wear and performance. A tad noisier than the OEM 21" Pilot Sport 4's.

Are those Tsportline? Got anymore pics? Considering them for cali winter. How’s the ride quality vs 21”.

That's an interesting idea! I went with the 19x9.5 Cardenios for my Plaid but I could put the 255/45/19 front 285/40/19 rear Pilot Alpins tires on these wheels and then buy a new set of wheels in the spring and mount my summer tires on those.
Those size alpins don’t seem to be in stock anywhere. But your plan is otherwise a good one.

I found 265/45/19 and 295/40/19 in Alpins (which is the same size Tesla recommends for some other tires on the Cardenios) and will be trying that out and will likely put the Pzero summer tires on some lightweight forged wheels in the summer.

Yes, They are TSportlne TS5 in 20x10. Overall a better ride. I am looking more a sport touring sedan than a sports car so these seem to be the perfect blend. Ride is still very compliant but obvious does not grip like the Pilot 4S. That also means it does spit up every piece of road debris, either.

The front seems to be on par or a bit noisier - not sure if it is the tire itself or the extra width. Ideally, I would have went with a 265/40r20 in the front but TSport only has this wheel in a 10 wide and I did not want that combo. the 285's fill out the rim and have good rim protection. Any narrower would lessen that greatly. My next set will probably be the Signature wheels in a narrower front.

Shaved approx 15lbs off the vehicle. Would be much greater with true forged wheels,

Overall happy with the change and what I invested in it.

And now for the requested wheel porn.

Most of the onwer who ran AS4 has the same issue with the road noise when it's new. However, it's been reported by an onwer that the noise went away after 1500 miles of driving. (after breaking in the tire)

Do you have a link to that owner's review?
I am the owner he is referring to. I have a little over 2k miles on them now and they are even quieter than 500 miles ago and a night and day difference to what they were brand new as far as howling/humming sound and overall quietness is concerned.

I really do like these tires now because they grip so good for being all seasons. I’m running 285/305

How is the range with that staggered setup and the all seasons? Are you logging higher than 350wh/mile?

They don’t have the acoustic foam, right?

And thanks for sharing!

I am considering the same setup, can you take a picture from close to head on/back down the side? I want to see how far the wheels protrude in/out of the fender in the back compared to the front if you don't mind! (low setting plz).

From the pics above it looks like the rear wheel is more tucked than the front which is what I'm afraid of by not doing a staggered setup.

I will try to get better pics but it is crappy outside so it may be a couple days.

This is controlled by the width of the tire and offset of the wheel. Using this calculator (https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro...=9.0&et2=12&text2=Sample 2: Honda Civic wheel)

The rears are exact same as 295/30r21. The fronts poke out 0.4" more at the tire but the rim is same as the OEM 265/35r21.

On the car I do not notice it - or at least not enough to care. My preference is to go to a 9.5 wide front and back to the 265 width keeping the offset at +40.
