Refresh S60 with AP1? Questions about AP, range upgrade and Cali HOV

So I'm trying to decide to go well above my budget and order a new 75D (optimistic a good year at work could address the gap) or buy something used. I saw a 2016 Model S 60 today that caught my eye as it has the refreshed front and the door panel indicates a July 16 build date. That said it has AP1 hardware. I think these are pretty rare, right? Didn't Tesla move to the AP2 hardware almost immediately when they started the refresh, and also the 60D vs. the S?

Can I assume I can pay $2500 or so and get the AP1 HW enabled? I don't think Tech Package was a thing at that stage so if so would it have everything AP1 can/will offer?

Can the S60 be upgraded to an S75 for about $2K for this build date?

Bonus question for those familiar with Cali HOV stickers. I know '18 is a transition period and cars with non-red stickers will be able to reapply for 19-22, but if this is a 16, and maybe hasn't even had a sticker, can this one get one now and will it be eligible to reapply or does that require a 17 or newer vehicle?

BurntOC, I think if it is 2016 it should have AP1. If you have the VIN you should be able to call up Tesla Service enter and ask them if it has AP1 or not, and also I can give you my sales advisor, normally they will be able to answer the most for eh question you asked above.

Based on the VIN you should be able to determine if ti can be upgraded to S75 as well. I think most 2016s S60s can be upgraded at a cost.

I have a model S 60 (AP1) and a model 3, both with autopilot. If you can stretch for the 75D with AP2.5 I’d recommend it. I bounce back and forth between the two, and I find that the model 3 AP is quickly leaving AP1 in the dust. I find AP2.x more confident in in all conditions and significantly so with poorly marked lanes, handles many more ambiguous situations solidly (and correctly) where AP1 really gets squirrelly, and has been improving at a much faster rate. AP2.x should keep making step change improvements and adding features, I’m skeptical AP1 will see much more from here. 2-3 years from now, I think you’d look back and be very disappointed NOT having chosen an AP2.x enabled car...

BurntOC, if you can try using Turo to rent Model S with AP1 and AP2 then make your decision after that. I have an AP1 and love it, it is a driving aid, and if you treat it as such it works great.

As far as CA HOV goes, if you have the VIN or plate # you can call the DMV Field Office Support Unit at 916-657-8035 to determine the vehicle's eligibility. I bought a 2015 S85 used from Tesla and found that it was indeed eligible now. And it will also be eligible for 2019, 20 + 21.

So a 2015 will be able to go to 2021 because it’s never had a sticker yet? I didn’t know that. I thought if it’s older than 2017; it expires in 2019. Unfortunately, I’ve had mine since 2013 and do not qualify to have it extended. I sure hope something remedies this before then.

Hey there! Ex-Tesla Delivery Specialist here!

I think you should consider your range needs and acceleration needs when debating the two powertrains. The 60 realistically gets around 200 miles. The 75D will get you around 230 in the real world. The acceleration and sensitivity of driver input in the 75D hugely surpasses that of the 60.

You're correct in the AP1 being rare for the 60 in that build date. If it's not already active, it'll cost you $3k to enable it. Tech package was for oooold school Teslas and has been a standard feature for the past 4 years or so.

You can upgrade the battery, but it'll cost you more than $2k and is really not worth it. Trust me. The supercharger network would be used pretty much exactly the same in a 60 & 75 config for any sort of distance traveling. Save your money.

Bonus question... HOV decals are tied to the license plate of the vehicle. I'm not sure if the new criteria could be back-dated to when the plate was implemented. I do know that if it's already registered w/HOV, you can just keep it on the vehicle if the plate stays with the vehicle.

That is in fact what I'm trying to do and I've been told that it was ok by someone at the DMV. However, I applied about 2 weeks ago and have yet to receive the new sticker. Also, I will have to reapply for the 2019-21 sticker. So this is theoretically possible but I haven't yet demonstrated in reality.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. For some reason I'm not getting notifications so I didn't know there had been more comments. By way of an update, I did decide to order a new 75D. In my area of California, at least, I just couldn't find any used Teslas that made sense at the price they were asking compared to a new one. Of course at the higher trims that's likely a different story, but at the base level, it just didn't make sense to me.
