Refused Delivery Today

Disclaimer: I already own a 2019 Model 3 Performance and love it. Picked it up at the same delivery center and had very minor issues that were fixed immediately. I love Tesla and already have my order in for the Cybertruck.

Refused delivery today in Marina Del Rey of my Blue/White/ 19 wheels/ No FSD/ Tow Hitch, due to the following issues:

- panel gap/ alignment of hood to left front fender
- quarter size paint bubbling/ clear coat deformity right corner of front bumper and tape strip stuck where bumper meets right front fender and unable to remove
- scratch on rear right door down to metal, door ding on rear right door
- black smudges on white interior and headliner throughout
- panel gap and alignment of trunk hatch
- dust imperfections in paint 4 inch area of both left side door wells
- accessory plastic along interior of rear left door not attached
- bubbling of weather stripping bottom of driver side door
- black marks/ scratches on white dash panel
- 3 large puckers in material on center console on driver’s side
- Out of stock of Gemini Wheel covers and unknown when they will be available and I would need to submit a service request to get them (Seriously?)

They “rescheduled” my delivery for tomorrow to see if those issues can be addressed/ replaced with the service specialists (they had already left for the day). I won’t accept delivery of a car that has that many issues and wait for them to hopefully be fixed. I spoke with the manager who was amazing and she related that although you can list all those items on the “do-bill” not all will be automatically be covered by Tesla. She would rather wait to see what the service specialists say and prefaced with, “If there are items they can’t fix we will just get you a different car and I have a feeling that’s what might happen.” She implied it’s better to refuse delivery than accept delivery and hope all issues will be fixed.

For those that have picked up their Y’s or refused delivery, were you also shocked at how flimsy the black plastic is on the exterior of the car and how easily it scratches and becomes discolored? I thought it would be more rigid. There is no way it will hold up if you have to drive daily on gravel roads or in the snow. Even with normal wear and tear I see it having to be replaced within the first 5 years.

Despite all of that, it is still a gorgeous car and I look forward to finally taking one home at some point.

Wow. Just wow. I didn't have this many issues, but with large areas that needed repaint and a dent in the quarter panel, I rejected my VIN. I can't believe they say there are one or more issues on this list that possibly won't be fixed? That is nuts. What issues are "acceptable"? No new car has any of these issues as acceptable. And I'm assuming now my Gemini wheels won't have covers. This is getting beyond bush-league. At least I'm seeing a blue MY being built. I'm seeing lots of white/black now, and wondering if they have moved to white/black, and blue/red MYs are going to be pushed to next quarter.

I feel very fortunate. I took delivery sight unseen. Had two paint issues, charging door scratch, and an issue with a rear middle seat part broken. I added all the issues in the app, dropped the car, got my loaner for a week and all was fixed... Minus panel gap (I'll live). My vin was very early 3000s and took delivery in early April.

Ohhhhh. So after repair they dropped the vehicle off to me and did a curb check right in front of my house and my black rims were RUINED!.. Made them take it back, they put an entire new rim on. Great service but i think they could tell i was about to blow my lid when i saw the rim at drop off.

"prohibited by buying another Model Y for 1 year". That's a good way to build brand loyalty and great for business.
No, it's a way of ensuring that those who are excessively anal about every little nit don't rinse and repeat. It's not cheap to take a return and have to sell as used.

Point being, inspect your car carefully before accepting delivery. But if there are serious latent defects only discoverable after purchase, that's a legitimate reason to return. Paint and fit-and-finish issues used to justify a return? Sorry, you didn't do your due diligence at pick-up.

Most trim, glass, and panel misalignments can be fixed (although they should get it right the first time!). I picked up my Model Y with NO panel gaps but with a 65XX VIN. If someone else rejected initial delivery and I got it after fixing, fine by me. So perhaps lower VIN is better?

Don't say that.. you're gonna scare off the VIN chasers out there.

I now have a VIN (0085xx) and a scheduled pickup at the Bellevue SC on Monday. I will bring my checklist and will be taking tons of pictures and video. Wish me luck!

Well, it was too good to be true. I just got a call from someone at Tesla telling me that the car I had been assigned was "not up to their standards" for sale. He was clearly aware that I had refused delivery of an early MY and anticipated I would likely reject this one too.

So, the matching process for a clean VIN begins anew. A pickup on Monday is highly unlikely

I really hoped to have a perfect MY rolling out of the Service Center today. Thanks to this forum, I had my checklist ready, but I had to refuse delivery for something that I didn't expect at all: the paint job. The doors on the driver's side had different shades of white. For a moment, I thought I was crazy, so I asked people standing around, and every one of them confirmed my observation. I was so stunned, I forgot about my checklist. When I pointed out the issue to the SA, he gave me an option to accept the delivery and let Tesla to "make it right," or wait for another delivery, however, he couldn't guarantee that the next car is not going to have the same issue. I guess I will take my chances.

It's crazy how many White Y's they delivered with this problem. I have seen at least 5 of them posted today on reddit and Facebook Model Y group. I would definitely not accept the car with the obvious paint defect either.

I took almost the exact same picture of a Y with a build date of 06/07 at the Portland delivery center. The two doors were bad enough but the rear quarter panel was even a different shade than the rear door. It wasn't subtle at all.

I just rejected a White Model Y yesterday. I could see the alignment issues from 50 ft away. It had all the standard issues: hugely misaligned rear tail lights, both rear doors misaligned, trunk looked like it would scrape itself opening/closing due to alignment, crooked frunk, condensation in headlights, some small paint defeats.

But this is what resulted in a <2 minute rejection (right on the front of the car visible from at least 20 ft away):

I was hoping that the forums had just biased me and that most cars are actually in great condition. However, I took a look at the other two they had on the lot and they all had medium to severe issues. Admittedly this was still only 3 cars. They told me rejecting would result in another VIN in august or September at the earliest. Sounds good to me, if it's bad on the 2nd try I will ask to delay to 2021.

My source from within Tesla factory tells me the paint department personnel lacks experience. Its to the point that even management turns a blind eye with the emphasis on quantity.

And to top it off, the QC department is still counting flying sheeps.

Zzzzz

I'm honestly having real difficult processing this absurd lack of quality control. IMO, mismatched color on major panels is blowing my mind and was clearly known when it left the factory. And which one is even the right tone of white? Turning a 'blind eye' doesn't even begin to sound like it explains this reckless behavior. What safety components were also treated with such disregard? I'm embarrassed that the passion that we all have for Tesla and what they stand (stood?) for is enabling and perpetuating this blatant abuse of its fan base. Maybe the wheels have fallen off, and quality really isn't going to get better, no matter how long we wait. Tesla may have a large market cap, but we all just saw them recently go from over $900 to $400 a share in a few days. Can happen at any time. And really? August or Sept for another VIN? First I'm hearing that from anyone. That sounds like yet again a sleazy car salesperson line. I think I'm just about as disappointed in the way they behave at this point as any other dealership. And I'm really tired of hearing 'new model' BS. Wasn't this car like 75% based on the M3?

While I wait for my VIN (which I'm not confident will be any time soon), and the probability that my 2nd VIN may be worse than my first, I'm going to reserve a Mach-E, so I can get in line. The reality of me charging on the highway is slim.

If anyone even cares from Tesla to read these forums - and I'm convinced at this point they don't care one bit - then you are disappointing me as an American, fulfilling a stereotype that has been going since the 70's about American car quality. Shame on you.

They likely don't have to always sell used. I returned an M3, and they told me they wait until after the 7 days elapse to file the registration paperwork etc. for that reason!

Besides that practice being illegal, I always love these anecdotes: "A Tesla person told me that... " For those in California, the fact the car leaves with temporary plates should tell you the story above is certainly wrong in California. If Tesla routinely fails to register vehicles assigned temporary plates, I'm sure the DMV would be very unhappy.

Don't know about Utah law.
