Regenerative braking and brake lights, how do it work

Folks: I notice on the dashboard image of the car that the brake lights are activated sometimes when the car is regenerative braking. Can anyone explain how this functions? Does it depend on the rate of deceleration? Proximity of the car behind you? Or???

It depends on the rate of deceleration.
