How do you precondition without scheduled departure?

Open the app and hit the little fan button on the main screen. Starts the climate and warms up the battery.

Interesting. Maybe this happens and then once target temp is reached the battery is topped off?

Yes. It will start charging the battery if it is drained below the limit due to preconditioning, and if the car is allowed to charge (i.e. not restricted due to scheduled charging). I can see on my Teslamate data that I always have a short charging session around the scheduled preconditioning time.
