Repair/replace interior trim piece w/ abrasion?

The side trim piece adjacent to the rear-seat back rest and the door opening, comes to a bit of a "point" about halfway up. On my car, it's gotten abraded to the point that the black surface has worn away and exposed the white material underneath. (Incidentally I'm not real thrilled about the inner surface used... it seems a bit fragile).

(this really needs a pic... I'll try and snap one)

Has anybody else experienced this? Better yet, has anybody replaced or repaired this piece and have any comments on cost/difficulty?

Thanks.
