Tesla may partner with Samsung to develop a semiconductor to be used to power autonomous vehicles, according to a report from Korea.

The report says Samsung’s Electronics Foundry division is working on a 5nm semiconductor for Tesla vehicles. Samsung previously supplied Tesla with 14nm chips that have undergone an argon fluoride (ArF) exposure process. The new chips will undergo a different process.

“The 5nm semiconductor applied with the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process is a high-tech product that only a small number of companies such as Samsung Electronics and TSMC can produce worldwide,” the report said.

The report said the two companies are expanding cooperation for the infotainment (IVI) product line using 5nm semiconductors. Various semiconductors such as processors, neural network processing units (NPUs), security integrated circuits, memories, and display driving chips (DDI) are used in IVI.

The developments could turn into a big opportunity for Samsung. “If it succeeds in mass production of Tesla-oriented products, it will be able to win the attention of other automakers,” the report said.
