It’s fun to imagine this but I seriously doubt this is the reason for the negative articles. Hiltzik and Mitchell are grizzled old journalists who I think just hate Tesla on their own, and aren’t trashing Tesla under orders of their billionaire boss. But I’m gonna find out.

So I found the incessant negativity an enmity towards Tesla by LA Times reporter Russ Mitchell puzzling, so I researched a bit into his articles to figure out what's going on. I have a theory.

First, here's the raw data:

Here's chronological list of links and headlines of all 484 articles Russ Mitchell wrote at the LA Times since 2014:

(I really hope I'm not breaking TMC's comment system with so many links!)

Edit: fixed the chronological order and typos.

Observations:
  • Russ Mitchell is covering Tesla obsessively, 201 out of the 384 stories are related to one of the companies of Elon Musk.
  • Early coverage of Tesla was neural, fair, sometimes click-baity, but not excessively negative, and certainly well within normal journalistic boundaries, even if I disagree with some of his articles.
  • End of 2016 Russ Mitchell published his first interview with Bob Lutz:
  • In April of 2017 the tone of Russ Mitchell's Tesla articles changed dramatically with the publishing of the following article of a summary of the TSLAQ short thesis:
  • The next 2+ years is a barrage of almost exclusively negative articles about Tesla by Russ Mitchell: well over 90% of the headlines are negative.
  • Note that shortly before he posted his short seller thesis on April 24, he wrote an article about a random Model S/X recall on April 20:
My hypothesis: after interviewing Bob Lutz in late 2016, Russ Mitchell developed his short thesis and went short Tesla. The article in April was his own summary of his short thesis, and he was basically stress testing it by writing an article about it, and he was also giving short sellers publicity. He was bashing the stock from April 2017 on when TSLA had its big run-up to the $389 all-time high. He never stopped bashing Tesla after that point. If true then he is using the LA Times as a stock bashing platform to enrich himself.

If true then this would also explain:

Also note that he never posted any disclaimers in his articles that I could find, he never declared whether he has any position in the companies he is reporting about. AFAICS the LA Times does not ban reporters from having a financial interest in the companies they are covering, and has no rules requiring disclosure to readers.

So my suggestion to anyone talking to Russ Mitchell: ask him whether he or any family member held a short position in Tesla in the past 2 years that he knows of. If he wasn't then it would be simple enough for him to deny the conflict of interest.

I have no idea whether my theory is true or not, but it might make sense for any Tesla investors who find any of Russ Mitchell's articles about Tesla deceptive and agree with this analysis to file an investor complaint with the SEC, as stock bashing while holding a short position is generally illegal and the SEC has wide investigative powers to uncover the truth. Even if the current SEC is rarely prosecuting such cases, filing an investor complaint creates a track record and documentary trail that future SEC administrations might pick up on.

    • In this article Bob Lutz outlines the main Tesla short seller thesis, that Tesla is "structurally unprofitable", because opex appears to scale with cash from operations. (This thesis was forcefully falsified with the Q3'18 and Q4'18 results where opex was mostly constant while revenue and cash from operations soared.)

Superb analysis. It would be great if someone who is not on the TESLAQ block list could post a link on Russ Mitchell's twitter feed. If it is true (and he doesn't suffer a heart attack) it will make him think twice about continuing like this. And if it is not true, it will maybe offer him a look in the mirror.

Maybe getting this to LA Times (chief) editors could also be helpful. Seeing hard evidence that 90% of what he writes about Tesla is negative may cause them to take action.

Fact Checking, you have outdone yourself with this post. Good grief you put a lot of time into it. Alas, I think your theory is extremely far-fetched and quite unlikely to be true.

I've spoken with Mitchell and I did not get this sense at all. Here is my counter-theory based on talking to numerous journalists who cover Tesla: Occam's Razor tells me many of these folks are decades-long career journalists who have become confirmed skeptics about certain tech companies. In the case of Tesla, they have not "drunk the kool-aid" as it were; they are not Tesla owners; they don't have the Tesla grin; they have not experienced that "living the future" feeling many Tesla owners experience; they think Teslas are nice cars and all, but for them, what fuels their skepticism (again: my guess) is what they see as hype and noise and fanfare, Elon overpromising and underdelivering, plus the secrecy and overall inaccessibility of the company and its executives for interviews and background information because they're for the most part shut out from regular access. I suspect they resent Tesla Corporate's White House-like practice of picking favorites: write positive articles about Tesla, get access to Tesla (maybe). Write one negative thing, and the door slams shut for a long time or forever. When Tesla sends journos into "exile" it probably just encourages them to keep writing negatively (what do they have to lose?) instead of the company continuing to engage and educate them so that maybe they'd start writing more fair, nuanced, better-researched articles. I sense they don't like all the pro-Tesla/pro-accuracy people (including me) giving them feedback about their articles. It creates a downward spiral of neverending negativity and FUD.

Now, before the Disagree Brigade starts a-clickin', please note: I am not defending these journalists nor the media outlets. I find the coverage of Tesla in the major media outlets generally pretty poor, very often misleading, usually lacking real information because they haven't done their damn homework, and the articles are then made worse by editorial decisions especially with headlines and choices of accompanying photos, oftentimes some uncomplimentary Elon photo which conveys a tone of contempt at the company and its chief executive.

And yet... I've had journalists tell me that from their viewpoint, they see most Tesla coverage in the news as too positive (!), and that media cuts Tesla way too much slack (!!). That blows my mind, and probably yours. There is a huge disconnect going on, as if pro-Tesla people live on one planet and skeptical-Tesla journos live on some other one where there's too much happy-talk about Tesla. (I think that's crazy and I don't know how journos get that impression.)

But.... all that said, still: I really don't think these journalists are participating in options trading, particularly of the shorts variety. It's not, in my experience, in the journalist DNA to gamble like that.

As for Mitchell's following the TSLAQ trolls he follows on Twitter (something that puzzles and dismays me a great deal), I have to wonder if a just-as-likely explanation is that he does it just to piss off Tesla fans. I just can't agree with FC's explanation that all the TSLAQ-following is Mitchell's huge tell revealing the reporter's colossal TSLA shorting activity going on in the background.

IF your a true journalist AND YOU WANT to write the best most accurate article......Then why would you not rent a M3 or MS or MX for a week and find out what all the "hype" and "fanfare" is all about.

Until you walk a mile ...comes to mind.

Honestly, that's what torques me off. If the negative articles about Tesla were about real stuff like the customer service fiascos or breaking the music player, then I'd be like, "fine, fair enough". But it's nonsense! I mean, if I wanted to write a lot of negative articles about Tesla, I could find plenty of real stuff, but instead they're pushing nonsense. The failure to do their homework is extreme! I could write better hit pieces about Tesla!

I mean, I did more homework than some of these articles for my high school newspaper -- we had higher editorial standards than the NYT, apparently! (That said, my high school newspaper dates to 1895 and has a storied history.)

and the articles are then made worse by editorial decisions especially with headlines and choices of accompanying photos, oftentimes some uncomplimentary Elon photo which conveys a tone of contempt at the company and its chief executive.

That's completely deranged. The news coverage is arguably lacking in criticism of Tesla's actual problems, but is full of complete BS.

I mean, that's not just being biased in one direction, that's just being flat-out irresponsible and not doing their jobs. When I read a storm of disinformation and FUD, and see not one mention of Tesla's real problems, this goes well beyond bias. This is weird.

I think I've talked to you about this before -- my girlfriend firmly believes that the disinformation campaign is primarily backed by oil companies and/or oil countries like Russia, and that they have no interest in spreading bad news about Tesla unless it makes all electric cars look bad. Any bad news that is entirely eccentric and specific to Tesla (like their weird customer service problems or their problems with software dev practices) does not serve the needs of the oil companies / oil countries, so it doesn't get pushed. If the Tesla bad news implies "Well, if you bought a Bolt you wouldn't have those problems", you don't see the Tesla bad news published.

But if a story manages to disparage all electric cars, even if it's a lie, it gets published.

I can't find a direct connection between any of these reporters and oil companies / oil countries, but their behavior sure does fit the theory that they're backed by oil.

That blows my mind

I agree.

Which is disqualifying for a reporter. It's all very well to have a clear bias which you advertise in your reporting, but deliberately following liars and crooks in order to piss hoest people off is something else. A reporter is supposed to disagree on the spin but present all the evidence and facts honestly. (Like Matt DeBord does.)

Sir/Madam, while you are investigating journalists and their motivations, I wish you would read up on the history of propaganda by Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, and Big Oil.

Journalists can have many different reasons for writing/broadcasting what they do.
Media corporations have one reason for employing those journalists and not others: the bottom line.

In the unlikely event that that's you, Mr. Mitchell, and not an impersonator...

TSLAQ doesn't have facts, Russ. I mean, really not. I'm a professional investor, and I can tell you, they don't even know how to analyze a balance sheet. They also routinely make stuff up, pure inventions.

And if you're using their *block list*, as some have alleged -- that's not a source of facts, that's a source of closing your ears.

I can write more accurate *negative* articles about Tesla than Mr. Mitchell has ever done. That should embarass Mr. Mitchell.

Just as importantly, a real journalist will establish a reliable home charging setup before trying out EVs. One can't claim to have a representative EV experience if they're hunting all over town for places to charge, as we've seen with far too many journalists.

>The news coverage is arguably lacking in criticism of Tesla's actual problems, but is full of complete BS.

Please provide fact-based details. So far, I've seen none.
Then you haven't been looking. Or you don't have enough background to be able to tell reality from fiction.

OK. So first of all, have there been any articles on how Tesla breaks stuff in software updates?
*crickets*
How about the difficulty reaching Tesla people on the phone?
*crickets*
How about the complaints about how far away service centers are?
*crickets*
How about the complaints about delivery dates being suddenly rescheduled on very short notice?
*crickets*

Meanwhile, we read:
nonsense about charging the car being difficult (it's trivial -- I drove from Toledo to central NY with zero advance planning just last week)
nonsense about fires (gas cars catch fire FAR more often and it's easy to find the stats),
nonsense about demand (anyone who has been paying attention realizes Tesla's demand substantially exceeds its ability to supply cars)
financial nonsense of numerous sorts (those who can actually read balance sheets know that Tesla has enough cash to coast for a year or more even if they continue having production problems)
arrant nonsense about yellow caution tape (this was the worst)
and so on

----

If you really just have no background in analyzing manufacturing companies at all, I'll be happy to help with the financial basics.

The crucial starting point is the concept of "fixed costs" vs. "variable costs". Tesla has a lot of fixed costs, the costs to "keep the lights on". Far more than most manufacturers, because Tesla owns its own service centers and dealerships and most of its tier 1 suppliers -- most car manufacturers slough off a lot of the fixed costs to dealerships or suppliers.

Each Tesla car sold is very profitable, in that (sales price of car - variable cost of producing car) is very large. But they need to be delivering more cars in order to cover the fixed costs.

The second point is demand vs. production. It's very clear that Tesla spends most of its time with a long backlog of orders, unable to produce cars fast enough to meet demand. There are all kinds of ways of seeing this and we discuss them endlessly in this forum. Demand is high. Production isn't where it needs to be.

----
Then we also read complete sideshow nonsense like "Oh no, Musk took a puff of weed" (like most of the country has). This is not reporting.

I think some auto reporters have a bias and it is probably amplified after getting strafed by well intentioned people trying to set the record straight. Auto reporters, unlike normal reporters, are on the receiving end of trips and goodies. Most reporting and general corporate policies have eliminated conflicts of interest like this a long time ago. The publishers don't want to pay the auto guy to go anywhere or buy or rent anything, so giving a loaner for a month or the Jaguar trip for the ipace are approved.
Regardless of the cause, taking a piss on the guy isn't going to win him over and getting reporters fired isn't going to win over other journalists, it will only drive home the Tesla is a cult story. Getting friends in the media is like anywhere else, most people want a little respect and courtesy. I'm in the minority here, but my life time experience in IT is that the obvious advantage of many new technologies are seen as short term trends or fads, until they are not. Replacing legacy applications with web apps, deploying software based encryption, consolidating global applications and video technology were all no brainers for my business users. Roadblocks by IT or the business themselves halted and slowed down the process. Early in my career I thought these people didn't like me (distinct possibility) or that it was personal, or they were probably lucky to figure out how to find the office every day. Over time it seems to me that anything outside most peoples area of passion or expertise, just doesn't make sense at first, second and third look. Finally it will hit them in some personal way and they see the light and it's like it was their idea the whole time. I think people showing people their car, giving rides, encouraging a friend to take a drive and politely letting them know that EV's are indeed much cleaner. The FUD will fade when market share reaches a point where most anyone that can buy a new car, will know a person with a Tesla. At that point the cars won't be for tree huggers, posers and people taking a chance on this risky start up.
I think Fact Checker is seeing the symptoms and how people are infected with the TSLAQ meme. I think the cure is exposure to Tesla the product, how it can improve their life (not mine or yours) and some personal issue. Maybe Russ will have a nephew with asthma and the Model X will improve his health. My electric mower has reduced my allergies when cutting the grass and I think directly impacts my health. These anecdotes take time to build into the general consciousness. Sure there is fake news and there are big oil and legacy auto people making up stories and shorts taking wack job stuff from the Keef's and tin hat people to spin BS. Combining everyone with a skeptical take on Tesla with Keef or Chanos just makes it harder to win those people over. Our take no prisoners politics is the same way, making compromise or seeing positive intent from opponents nearly impossible. I call out BS on twitter by shorts, but even calling out Linette Lopez, who does seem like a short asset, only alienates other media people and drives them away from Tesla.

My apologies to the mods: I won't comment on this anymore. Perhaps we need a thread on media engagement where we can disagree on rules of engagement. Not just counterfactual data, but ways people expect the media to come around to the joy of Tesla.

The boring reason is I search out facts and analysis from a wide variety of sources. Including TMC.
But the funny thing is you (Mitchel) ONLY write negative slanting stories about Tesla.

Not a word about how Tesla came from nowhere to sell the most successful model introduction in several decades. No word on how it is obliterating "Tesla killers" like Bolt. Not a word on how great of a success Tesla is having making people buy EVs as part of a solution to the growing Climate Crisis. Nothing about how Tesla is the clear market leader in an industry growing at 60%+ a year.

Basically nothing with any kind of historical perspective on Tesla.

To use an analogy - it is ok to be a conservative (or liberal) journalist. But it is not okay to try to pass off as an independent (like Bill O'Reilly actually used to).

ps : Ironically, Tesla shorts, who keep talking about Tesla "fraud" completely ignore actual frauds committed by legacy gas car makers like VW, Merc, Nissan etc. Infact executives of those companies are actually in prison.

Most importantly -- nothing about how people driving electric cars like them so much they never want to go back to gasoline cars.

Funny story, I was forced to rent a gasoline car because my Tesla was in the shop. It had push-button start. I had trouble remembering all the things I was supposed to do when I parked it. In a Tesla you just put it in park. In the gas car, I had to also set the parking brake, turn off the lights, lock the door, and can you guess what I forgot?

An hour later I came back to find the engine running.

I never want to drive a gas car again.

I haven't seen a single piece from Russ Mitchell which mentions how convenient it is to drive an electric car, with a "full tank" every morning and no trips to gas stations. Or how the implementation of regenerative braking on Teslas -- all on the accelerator pedal -- has saved people from crashes by reducing the reaction time necessary to brake suddenly. Or any of the other everyday good experiences of driving an EV.

To use an analogy - it is ok to be a conservative (or liberal) journalist. But it is not okay to try to pass off as an independent (like Bill O'Reilly actually used to).
Yep.
