I just plopped down the $100 reservation on a 2017(May) model X 100D for 60k(My price limit) but now I'm on the fence due to mileage and color combo
  • Upsides
    • FSD included(AP2.0), Premium Upgrade PKG, Dual Chargers, Free supercharging, 100 pack
  • Downsides
    • 83k miles, 5 Seater, Not my favorite color combo(Silver Metallic, Tan Prem Pkg seats)
    • Only 16.5k miles left in extended warranty
Is this a bad deal with the high mileage?
Would you try to hold out longer for a better deal?

Any input is appreciated

Seems like those downsides are awful if I were getting it..

With a Tesla, especially an older X, you definitely want that warranty.

If you aren't happy with the colors and the seats, it's the wrong one for you. Don't buy one just to buy one, get the right one.

I would hold off, or check the for sale forum and see if anyone here has one for sale.

Thanks for the input, I'm thinking the same. I've just been searching the Sale forums/ev-cpo for months and have yet to see a single 100D Model X with FSD and warranty left for less than 70k+

EV-CPO archive there has only been 3(including this one) under 65k and none of the others had FSD. Next cheapest ever with FSD and was 67.5K and 55k miles.

60k is my absolute limit but I think holding out and hoping Model Y depreciates the older 100D Model X's is my best option.

If you're looking specifically for FSD, remove that from the equation. That's pretty much a fixed cost item. Maybe find one with EAP, or look into FSD later on if you really need it. But, if you want to get an X, you must find the one you want. The battery, warranty, and seating - you're not changing those. The exterior color, if you want to wrap the vehicle, you can...

And then, if you aren't in a rush to purchase one (is there an absolute need at this time), then, like anything, just wait. You'll find the one you want.

When I was searching last year, it took almost 5 months to find the one I want at the price. I got a new X, 6 seats, pearl white with cream, and EAP instead of FSD... Even if I buy FSD now, it still costs less than if I had purchased without trying to find one.

I looked through 4 or 5 Tesla consolidators every day, on my breaks, even while brushing and getting ready (to the wife's annoyance).

If you're in dire need, then, you'll get stuck with something you may not want, and regret it.

When looking at used cars the first thing I do is come up with an estimate of how much longer I think the car will last. And compare the cost per mile to a new car.

If you assume the car will last until 500,000 miles, then it is an OK deal.

Used: $60,000 / (500,000 -83,000) = $0.14/ mile
New: $85,000 / (500,000 ) = $0.17 / mile

But if you assume a car is only going to last 150,000 miles.

Used: $60,000 / (150,000 -83,000) = $0.89/ mile
New: $85,000 / (150,000 ) = $0.56 / mile

Your cost per mile driven is more expensive for the used car than a new one. Why would anyone want to pay more to drive an older car?

Personally I think all of the used Model X's are way overpriced and it is better to either wait, or buy new. 150,000 maybe low, but I think it is closer to 150,000 than 500,000.

I think that's a terrible deal for 3 year old car and 83k miles. You might as well get new one.

I've been browsing Tesla's used offering and prices are insane. Way out of line. You can get good idea about residual value in cars based on the lease payments. $88k new model X leases for $1233 a month for 36 months with total loss of $44,388 in 3 years. So residual on that vehicle is probably $50k. And they'd want to flip it for $70k. That's insane.

I don't think used Tesla is good value at all. IMHO.

Been looking since Christmas but even after Model Y and corona, used 100D Model X prices have barely budged, thinking waiting is my only option with a ~60k limit as I really don't want a 75D or 90D

This one out the door was 63.5k. New, no FSD after everything was just short of 90k and 25k over budget.

Thank you everyone for the input, was really quite helpful

I think we are in for another 10% price drop on current used market prices. I don’t want to sound negative but it’s the reality of the used car market. It will get hit harder than new car prices since dealers will have to soon offer 0% financing and allow delayed payments on new cars. Used car market is in for a ride.

If you can wait, I’m positive you will find a 2017 100D with low mileage fully loaded with fsd in the 60k range

The question is how long will we have to wait. I'm in the market for a MX and will probably need to purchase within a month.
Currently considering a 2016 75D with less than 30k miles for 58k. Ideally I want to be under $60-62k at the max as that is my mental budget right now.

Trust me if you can wait 1 month or 2 I’m positive you will find a better deal and won’t kick yourself and look back. I have a friend who work for used car dealer and even if they could buy they wouldn’t. Manheim isn’t even doing auctions right now and cars are piling up everyday from lease returns.

You're absolutely right there's got to be a whole lot of lease returns piling up. Tesla relisted the car a day ago and it's already down to 56k today.

I'll be keeping an eye out the next few months for my perfect scenario 100D, White or mdnght silver, FSD
