Reserving your Model 3 (official Tesla blog)

Just talked to a product specialist in Minnesota who said owners did NOT need to show up at store. According to him someone would reach out ahead of time via email so we can make our reservations early without showing up. Also, priority is by VIN# with earlier VINs receiving preference. I'm hoping I'll get a decent placement with VIN 8870 in Minnesota!

Are you saying that owners with lower vins will get priority? I'm on my second S so no longer have low vin on current model. Hopefully I can use my first car!

Why does the website say that you get better priority by visiting the store rather than reserving online? Stores will be crazy.

The blog post doesn't say you necessarily get better priority by visiting the store, it says you get better priority by visiting the store when it opens, because then you get your reservation in before people who reserve online (10AM local for most store openings, 8:30PM PDT for online, so even if you live in Hawaii, you get a a few hours' head start). It's as simple as first-come, first-serve (once all other factors are accounted for, anyway, like trim level and geography).

Does that mean those who reserve in store will not have seen the car when they place the order?

Yup. Myself and others are putting money down sight unseen. But remember it's refundable, so it's really no big deal (in my opinion). I also don't even care too much about looks. Based on past cars by Tesla, and the presumption that they met their 200+ mile goal and $35,000 base model price, I'm going to want the car.

Rumor is existing employees at the Tesla HQ got to see a picture of it when they went to order, and there was a rumor in-store people would get to see a picture of it, but I don't think that's the case.

Does anyone know how multiple reservations are handled? If an employee or existing owner reserves 2 or more. Is the first one given priority and the others enter the "regular" queue?

You only get 1 owner-priority model 3 for each Tesla you currently own. If you own let's say one (1) Model S, and reserve two (2) Model 3, the second Model 3 will nor receive owner priority status.

I just called my local Tesla store, in California, and they said they would be opening on March 31 at 10 AM, and that they will be taking reservations. Now for the important part:

I asked if I should bring cash or cashiers check and he said neither one, because it needs to be debit or credit. I said oh my I don't have that (the daily max on my cards are all way below $1,000). And then they said well you can bring account number maybe I'll have to check into that. And I said as in a checking account, are you sure? They said they could call me back. I said what else could I do? He said they're also taking Paypal. He said they can't take cash or paper check.

I do have checking account and PayPal. I'll bring one of each.

Any confirmations this is enough?

You can also call the bank who holds that credit card line - let them know the purchase you'll be making and they can either temporarily increase your limit or allow the transaction to go through. I had to do the same when buying my fiancee's engagement ring.

A product specialist at the Tesla store in Highland Park, Illinois just now emailed me to inform me that their opening time on March 31st has reverted back to a normal 10 am CDT opening, and Model 3 reservations will be accepted at that time. He writes that all Tesla stores will open and accept reservations on the 31st at their normal opening times. I then phoned the Tesla store in Skokie, Illinois, and they confirmed that they had just been told the same thing by the company.
Great! I'm taking delivery of my Model X today at the Highland Park location. Hoping to see some lines!
