Retractable Door Handles - Is It Practical?

Either way, the door handles remain my only big problem with this car. Aside from the 2009 video above, I have never really seen them work. And I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to stick my fingers in the handle and not worry about keeping them...

If regular handles were an extra option, I would pay to get them.

I should have added that I just think she was to excited as she was having difficulty opening the door through the window, so to not necssarily take that as it not working. She spent like 5 seconds trying to open the door from the outside before reaching in through the window. I really think excitement was playing a part in it and she just wanted to be the first spectator to sit in the driver seat.

The early prototypes had Aston Martin door handles. They were both flush and much more practical. Rather than be motorized they had a pivot point. Press on the front and the back pops out - spring loaded - safe and simple.

I can't imagine that Tesla will bring something to market if it's not reliable.

couldn't you say that about any company that has ever worked on a product? And we all know that there have NEVER been any reliability issues with any product ;) Point is, companies cut corners, don't foresee all conditions the product might be used, or do poor testing themselves. Not to mention that testing can only do so much to re-create real world use cases. They may be reliable for the first two years, but what about the third year? Testing can only do so much to answer that question. I like to think that Tesla will avoid reliability issues with the door handles, but this and a bunch of other things related with the Model S are novel and new. This car, like all first year cars of a new generation (for a particular model) will have some widespread issues (however minor they may be to fix). That is inevitable.

I would have preferred the flush, flipper handles because I like simple. But Elon is set on the retractable handles, so that's what we'll get.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the final interior, standard options, and color schemes. Where's that design studio???

Or even just a simple list of standard equipment. It is conspicuous by its absence.

Indeed. Rather than interpreting that as tardiness on Tesla's part, I'll put it down to

a) a lack of resources to do the proper bookkeeping/communication or

b) (pessimism alert!) Tesla winging it through to production in July to see what the bits and pieces are that do make it to production and what'd have to be left out just so that they don't overpromise and underdeliver or

c) (wishful thinking alert!) they have a few surprises up their sleeve and will pleasantly surprise us all with several goodies that we haven't seen before or even speculated about!

I think it's either taking longer to design the new site than they expected or there was a big glitch in the preparation. Perhaps they had to change horses mid-stream or something. George said we would be blown away by the new design studio.

No offense to George and co, but I've yet to be as excited as they are about ANYTHING. Remember the amazing chargeport? Weren't there supposed to be X revelations we hadn't even considered? Maybe it's because we either guess or learn the info before the big reveal that the final "oh wow" moment falls flat for me.

Yes, aka desensitization due to spending too much time on this forum! Remember what they say about online porn

I will go a step further. There is enough new about this car that I do NOT want the retractable handles I also am not interested in hearing people complain if they are not part of the final design. If they cannot make them 100% reliable, then they should leave them out. They have no appeared reliable in any demonstration . Plus, they are an unnecessary gimmick. Finally, I would hate to pay for a ranger visit to get a door handle fixed. That would piss me off.

I have had to visit the dealer in oder to get my normal mechanical door handle repaired in my car. Good luck finding something that is 100% reliable.

I would recommend relaxing a bit. I have never thought to myself "boy, when they come out with that new (Insert Manufacturer Here) I sure hope they get the (insert component here) 100% reliable or else I am not interested." Assume the company is building you a car that they are backing for a long time with an extensive warranty. They are less interested in faulty components than you are... I am guarantee that.

I haven't seen the system work, but I would assume that the handles would extend whenever the car is stopped, running and in park. Not sure about the emergency situation, but rarely are the presence of door handles necessary for getting in the car by emergency responders, esp. if the accident is really severe.

Here's a link to the Beta Reveal back in October. At time 00:46 seconds Mr. Musk opens the rear door with just a simple touch and look at how quickly the rear door opens. Here it is.

Here's something a lot better when it comes to the door handles at the 4:59 point. Information from the designer

Even Franz seemed a bit unsure of their operation right there.

Katie also touched them in the above video to open them. Couple them with this text from the Model S features page:

Depending on how you read that, it could be that they UNLATCH with a simple touch or that they SLIDE OUT with a simple touch... The pricing/options page still says this under tech package though:

Automatic keyless entry

Still not definitively saying much... I wonder if they were having issues with the proximity thing so they're slowly backing away? Or maybe in all of the scenarios in the video, the doors can't work as designed since they aren't actually approaching the car, they've either been getting out or standing next to it.
