Risk of Delaying Delivery

I'm curious if I'm risking anything by slow playing my ISA specialist. My situation is I am taking delivery where I live in Austin, TX but will be out of town for most of the next 6 weeks. Texas is already somewhat tricky so you have to fully fund the vehicle before they will ship it from California. I would love to wait as long as possible (3-4 weeks) to actually make the payment so the timing works up with my sechedule but I feel the ISA may end up giving away my vehicle and VIN....

Any thought on doing this? With federal tax credit status unknown I would hate to risk pushing it out further.

There have been numerous reports of VINs being given away when people delay. Texas is special in that you do have to pay first so that might be a good advantage / strategy. Off topic buy my kid went to boot camp at Lackland about 8 years ago. Loved that area and the food lol.

I think Tesla is getting smarter by giving a larger time table window when it comes to estimates for deliveries. If they can maintain producing 5,000 cars a week then it might be no problem getting your car ASAP when you want it.

In your case advantage goes to Texas buyers but who knows for sure.

Good luck!

So, you are asking the local delivery center to store that car for over a month?

Once it is confirmed that they went over 200,000 this month, you'll have 6 months of full tax credit. I'm pretty sure that there is no way that Tesla would have allowed the number to go over last month. I'm pretty sure that they were already talking to the IRS before the end of the month. The only reason why we are not hearing anything else, is because the IRS has been on vacation and it will probably take a few comittees that have never done this before to verify the results.

I am out of the country this week, but ETA for delivery is 7/14 (ISA said "tentative", just heard from her this morning for the very first time ... I flew out yesterday).

I have no choice but to ask for a 1-week delay. Will my VIN get reassigned? I hope not

Was in a simular situation. Tesla offered me a delivery date on which I was already scheduled to be out of the country for work. I specifically asked to change my delivery date to 13 days later (the very next day I arrived back) thinking all was good. Upon returning I learned they reassigned my vin and am now in delivery purgatory. Despite repeated asks for when a car will be available Tesla has not been able to produce a date or an estimate.

Its now been 3 weeks since they reassigned my vin. I am appalled at how Tesla is treating its customers.

It seems like everyone who ordered after 6/28 is no longer being assigned VINs, whether that is due to a huge backlog or tesla not producing rwd cars at the moment remains to be seen. The huge batch of awd VINs this morning means they may have switched production to mostly awd cars for the moment.

The federal tax credit will be there for the full amount at least until Sept 30. Just try not to push it beyond that until Tesla confirms when they hit 200k.

I'm still working through some things with ISA so haven't confirmed payment yet although I do have a VIN. Things a little different with me being in Texas as they need full payment before shipping the car, so I have a tad more flexibility but doubt I will be able to push it out as much as I was hoping.

I plan on flying back to Austin to accept delivery if I absolutely need to.... No need to risk getting pushed out past September over a few weeks. I'll keep you all updated on how everything goes.

Not true. 6/30 config and contacted by ISA today for a late August delivery. Had to give it up because of an upcoming move :(

Got a call from Las Vegas today and told that they have a car for me that's already at the local delivery centre and I can pick it up as early as Sunday. Not sure how this happened, but I called the support line instead of my ISA last weekend and was was told the term Tesla uses for people in my situation (delayed delivery) is "remarketing". She checked my account and said everything looked good, but would check with her manager and call me back. That did not happen, waited 2 days and called back into the support line. This time I was told that my account was made eligible for "remarketing" the same day that I first called the support line on the weekend. Agent said she would add some notes and make sure that there would be no other reasons why I would not be eligible. Then, 4 days later I get a call for delivery. Coincidence? Maybe, but they did say the the car was already at the delivery centre, so its possible that someone else opted to delay their delivery and I got reassigned their car, or that they just delivered a bunch of cars, or ... Its a mystery. Just happy I am getting my car 12 weeks after I placed my order.
