Well, in a pulling rig, there's actual reason for it, as the article states. High flow injectors increase the HP, and it takes a bit for the turbos to spool up and supply enough boost to actually combust all the fuel , so you typically smoke most at initial full throttle, and then it dies down substantially.

The most modified of the rigs will never completely eliminate the smoke, as the "super fuel" (i.e. inject more fuel then they can burn) as a method to keep components cool.

The guys modifying their rigs to simply dump fuel in to the system that they don't have the boost to make more HP are doing it just for show...

I had a F350 Turbo Diesel with custom chip in it... I could lay down some coal at the highest setting...
