Roof bars without using adhesive pads?

I’ve just bought the Tesla roof bars, and will only be using them 3 or 4 times a year for family holidays etc. Not keen on leaving the adhesive pads on in between, as I’ve yet to see any on a review video that have gone on cleanly (and even when they are installed well they still look fairly obvious). Given my racks will only be on for short periods I’m considering using them without the adhesive pads. Has anyone done this, and if so how has the paint held up?
