Routing on partial premium trim solved...

Had on authority from product specialist (who checked with his boss) that not only does live traffic not show (which is clear in spec) but routing is OFFLINE!!

Maybe everyone realised but I certainly didn't. Think that's a big shame for a 'connected' car that it's essentially using old fashioned A-B by shortest route.

Presumably you can always connect the car to a Wi-fi hotspot on your phone

I saw a video where a SR+ car showed it still taking account of traffic when routing even though it didn’t show on the map. Perhaps that was because the car was in range of Wi-fi at the time, or the map download includes historic traffic trends

I've already resigned myself to continue using my phone for routing. I use google maps navigation every day to commute around various jams and end up making decisions based on if I see red bits along the route despite google telling me its faster in certain cases. It would often reroute and deduct 1-2 min which is within the "similar ETA" margin.

So not seeing live traffic, even though it takes it into account is a bit moot. Might run them in parallel....

Ultimately if they decouple it from the £8k LR AWD upgrade which I cant justify, I might go for it. In the mean time my phone does it for free.

Yep. It has nice place to put your phone - just under the screen. So I'll give them that. In other cars you have to stick your phone on the dashboard :)

I queried that beeand I've been specifically told that's not the case.

Which of my statements are you disagreeing with, because I think they are correct.
On SR+:
1) No traffic data displayed
2) Navigation is computed on Tesla's servers
3) Navigation uses traffic information, even though real-time traffic isn't displayed.

I also said both Google Maps and Waze compute navigation on Google's servers (aka the cloud) and use traffic data.

2) and 3) have been told incorrect.

Maybe - but this doesn't conclusively prove anything. And call me cynical, but this is a US car and it's possible (albeit unlikely) that things are different. I will continue my research but really need it confirmed by a UK specialist (hence me in a UK forum).

but routing is OFFLINE!!

Can't speak for M3, but in MS if I don't have mobile connection then I can only route to an address.

When I have mobile connection I can type in anything (e..g that Google could find) which is, of course, far superior.

Either way, I use Waze for routing and Screen for a MAP (I use Tesla route planner, but on MUTE). Of course sometimes they disagree. Tesla tells me predicted arrival battery percentage SoC, and stuff about Supercharges on route

But Waze knows about traffic (better than Tesla SatNav IME) and also Police, Hazards AND new roads. The new roads bit might be a reason for off-line route planning, but either way I would expect a dedicated SAAS to provide FAR better routes than the poxy chip and database inside the car.

Yeah, its pants having my phone sliding around the car so that i can do this. But Waze trumps Tesla SatNav IMHO.

So the product specialist has admitted he was wrong. See below...

Will Standard Connectivity affect in-car maps and routing?
No. All cars with Standard Connectivity will continue to receive maps & navigation functionality similar to those with Premium Connectivity, including traffic-based routing, Trip Planner and Supercharger stall availability. Premium Connectivity will add satellite-view maps and live traffic visualization.
